An Original Crochet Piece From My Brand: A Diamond Motif Granny Square Shirt.

I'm excited to share with you an original crochet piece made by yours truly. My hands created this beauty and yes, the first of its kind is in the colour purple.The crochet world is indeed vast and there are numerous opportunities to get creative. A friend always told me that one can make anything with crochet and I couldn't agree less.

After sharing the process of making the diamond motif crochet granny squares here, I opted to make one of my favorite crochet wears; a button down shirt. When I started this process, I thought it was going to be swift and easy. Stick around to find out if it truly was.

Materials Needed

🤍: 2.5cm and 3.5cm crochet hooks.
🤍: Crochet granny squares.
🤍: Measuring tape.
🤍: Stitch markers.
🤍: Darning needle.
🤍: Yarn.
🤍: A pair of scissors.
🤍: Blocking board.
🤍: Steamer.

Procedure.

After making about sixty granny squares in total, painstakingly sewing in all the loose ends and then blocking every granny square, the steps that followed were coupling steps.

First, I started by outlining all the granny squares I needed to make the back panel. I don't know if this just applies to me but whenever I make crochet shirts or tops, I like to begin with the back panels; maybe because back panels are usually plain and straightforward.

After outlining the granny squares, I got to coupling. I used single crochet stitches to join every granny square together.

When I began this process, it felt like I was going to keep at it for a very long time but once I was done with a couple of granny squares, I picked up speed and coupling became easier.

I broke down the coupling of this shirt into three days. For the first day, I coupled the back panel and one front panel. On the second day, I made the next front panel, the sleeves and then I started making the collars. On the third day, I finished up everything.

For the collar, I switched to a smaller hook size, 2.5mm, and then proceeded to make many rows of half double crochet stitches. I like it when my collar has just enough width so I kept increasing till I was satisfied.

Choosing the buttons was another interesting aspect of this crochet piece. To give it more flare, I opted to go for vintage buttons and I got those in various colours. An amazing individual assisted in choosing this particular buttons because the options were endless and left to me, I would have gone with each and every alluring button.

Working over and sewing in loose ends seemed tasking because every point of connection had at least two loose ends; one at the beginning and one at the end. I had to diligently work over or sew in these loose ends before moving over to my favorite part– finishing.

I like making the final rows of single crochet stitches round the ends of many crochet pieces I make. This gives the piece and finer and dare I say, neater finish. It's my opinion that inasmuch as a crochet piece looks very stunning, if it has a ragged finish, this may take away the beauty of such a piece.

The last thing I did was steam block the piece to loosen it up and make it more flowy. I liked the shirt before steaming but absolutely loved it after I steamed it.
