Bandeja decorativa para tocador/ Dressing table tray 💗😍

Hello gente creativa de Hive! Qué tal va su semana? Por estos lados finalmente hoy pude terminar una bandeja decorativa para la habitación de Miranda, que al estar elaborada con una pasta de yeso y harina de trigo había que esperar algunos días para que secara por completo antes de pintar, así que se imaginarán como estaba la reina de la ansiedad y la impaciencia esperando para poder ver el resultado final, pero sin dudas valió la pena, ya que amé el resultado y es que es absolutamente bello y se ve muy linda en la mesa de noche de Miri, y lo mejor es que no solo es para decorar, sino para que ella tenga a la mano los accesorios que usa de forma regular.

Hello, creative folks at Hive! How’s your week going? Over here, I’ve finally managed to finish a decorative tray for Miranda’s bedroom today. As it’s made from a mixture of plaster and wheat flour, I had to wait a few days for it to dry completely before painting it, so you can imagine how anxious and impatient I was, waiting to see the final result, but it was definitely worth the wait, as I absolutely love how it turned out – it’s absolutely beautiful and looks lovely on Miri’s bedside table. Best of all, it’s not just for decoration, but also keeps the accessories she uses regularly within easy reach.

Estas bandejas decorativas están en tendencia y tienen un sin fin de usos, y las puedes ver en diferentes materiales, de hecho ella tiene una hecha en casa también que está elaborada con cartón recubierto con felpa y que es para que coloque sus lentes, pero yo quería hacer una para que pudiese dejar los accesorios que usa a diario y que los tenga al alcance de su mano, y para esto me busqué un montón de ideas que luego le mosté a ella para que decidiera el modelo, y escogió esta con una forma ovalada y diseño orgánico en color blanco y cerecitas, que me parece no van mucho con la decoración, pero pues, así es mi niña, no le gusta una sola cosa y no le da miedo mezclar como a su mamá, que quiere todo de una misma forma 🤣

Les cuento que no es la primera vez que trabajo con este tipo de masas moldeables, ya que por muchos años trabajé con masa flexible, y hace dos navidades probé con una masa de maicena y bicarbonato, y la verdad es una actividad que disfruto mucho, porque además de relajante me permite crear a mis anchas, y aunque también he trabajado con yeso, nunca había probado esta mezcla de yeso y harina de trigo que me encontré dando vueltas por pinterest, y sin dudarlo decidí intentar y el resultado me gustó muchísimo, y por eso lo comparto con ustedes, así que aquí vamos.

These decorative trays are all the rage and have endless uses; you can find them in all sorts of materials. In fact, she has a homemade one too, made from cardboard covered in plush fabric, which she uses to keep her glasses in, but I wanted to make one so she could keep the accessories she uses every day within easy reach, So I looked up loads of ideas, which I then showed her so she could choose the design. She picked this one with an oval shape and an organic design in white with little cherries – which I don’t think really go with the decor, but hey, that’s my girl for you. She doesn’t like just one thing and isn’t afraid to mix things up, unlike her mum, who wants everything to be the same 🤣

I should mention that this isn’t the first time I’ve worked with this sort of modelling clay, as I used to work with play dough for many years, and two Christmases ago I tried a mixture of cornflour and bicarbonate of soda. To be honest, it’s an activity I really enjoy, because as well as being relaxing, it lets me create whatever I like, and although I’ve also worked with plaster, I’d never tried this mixture of plaster and wheat flour that I stumbled across on Pinterest, and without hesitation I decided to give it a go and I loved the result, which is why I’m sharing it with you, so here we go

Paso a paso/ Step by step

Para iniciar lo primero que haremos será elaborar la masa de yeso, y para esto mezclamos en un bol el yeso y la harina de trigo y agregamos agua poco a poco, en mi caso lo fui haciendo por cucharadas para no excederme y una vez estuvo bien mezclada y tuvo un consistencia similar a la masa de modelaje que usan los niños, agregué el aceite y amasé por unos minutos hasta que todo estuvo bien integrado y la masa se sienta suave y flexible.

To begin with, the first thing we’ll do is make the plaster mixture, and to do this, we mix the plaster and wheat flour in a bowl and add water little by little; in my case, I added it by the spoonful so as not to add too much, and once it was well mixed and had a consistency similar to the modelling clay children use, I added the oil and kneaded it for a few minutes until everything was well combined and the dough felt smooth and pliable.

En este punto la guardamos en una bolsa plástica por 5 minutos, y nos aseguramos que no haya aire dentro de la bolsa y transcurridos el tiempo de espera está lista para trabajar.

At this point, place it in a plastic bag for 5 minutes, making sure there is no air inside the bag; once the waiting time is up, it is ready to use.

Seguidamente procedemos a estirar la masa con un rodillo (pueden usar también una botella) dejándola con un grosor de 1 centímetro, y con el cuter corto en forma ovalada, retiro el excedente de la masa y con las manos voy dando la forma curva que tiene en los bordes, y para asegurar que no se mueva usé unas tapas de botellas plásticas y dejé secar por 48 horas que se sintieron como una semana 🤣

Les comento que el paso del secado es sumamente importante, no es algo que debamos apresurar porque les pasará lo que a mí, que en el primer intento, por estar siempre de impaciente la dejé justo frente al aire acondicionado y el resultado fue que la masa se agrietó y terminó quebrándose, así que denle su tiempo y cuando la pieza no se sienta fría y esté muy liviana quiere decir que ha secado por completo.

En mi caso, en el segundo intento la dejé en el cuarto de Miranda, donde no hay aire acondicionado y no estaba al alcance de mi vista para evitar tocarla, así que pueden ubicarla en una habitación donde no tengan aire, no reciba sol directo y por favor, resistan la tentación de tocarla hasta que pasen las 48 horas. No sean como yo 🤣

Ok gente, después de la advertencia sigamos!

Next, roll out the dough with a rolling pin (you can also use a bottle) until it’s 1 centimetre thick. Using a craft knife, cut out an oval shape, trim off the excess dough, and use your hands to shape the curved edges, and to make sure it didn’t move, I used some plastic bottle caps and left it to dry for 48 hours, which felt like a week 🤣

I should point out that the drying stage is extremely important; it’s not something we should rush, otherwise you’ll end up like me: on my first attempt, because I’m always so impatient, I left it right in front of the air conditioning, and the result was that the dough cracked and ended up breaking, so give it time, and when the piece no longer feels cold and is very light, that means it has dried completely.

In my case, on my second attempt I left it in Miranda’s room, where there’s no air conditioning and it was out of sight so I wouldn’t be tempted to touch it, so you can put it in a room without air conditioning, out of direct sunlight, and please, resist the temptation to touch it until 48 hours have passed. Don’t be like me 🤣

OK everyone, now that the warning’s out of the way, let’s get on with it!

Una vez transcurrieron las 48 horas fui a ver mi pieza y tenía algunas grietas pequeñas, así que hice una mezcla ligera con yeso y con la ayuda de un pincel las rellené todas y traté de corregir pequeñas imperfecciones y la dejé secar un día más.

Once the 48 hours had passed, I went to have a look at my piece and noticed it had a few small cracks, so I made a light mixture of plaster and, using a brush, filled them all in and tried to smooth out the minor imperfections, then left it to dry for another day.

Finalmente llegó el momento de poder pintar, pero previo a ello con una lija fina, lijé toda la superficie para tratar de dejarla lo más prolija posible, aunque como se trata de una pieza artesanal, la verdad no me preocupe mucho por pequeñas imperfecciones, pero sí trate de dejar lo más lisa posible la superficie para luego proceder a pintar.

The time had finally come to start painting, but before doing so, I sanded the entire surface with fine-grit sandpaper to try and make it as smooth as possible. Although it’s a handcrafted piece, I didn’t really worry too much about minor imperfections, but I did try to make the surface as smooth as possible before moving on to the painting.

Como les comenté arriba, Miranda quería la bandeja de color blanco, así que trabajé con pintura acrílica de color blanco y con un pincel cubrí toda la superficie dando tres manos de pintura, y una vez que ésta secó completamente lijé nuevamente la superficie para eliminar las marcas del pincel.

As I mentioned earlier, Miranda wanted the tray to be white, so I used white acrylic paint and a brush to cover the entire surface with three coats of paint; once it had dried completely, I sanded the surface again to remove the brush marks.

El siguiente paso es pintar las cerezas en la superficie plana de la bandeja, y para esto utilice pintura color rosa para mantener los colores que ya estamos utilizando en la habitación, y me ayudé con una esteca con punta redonda.

Si no tienen esta herramienta en su casa, no se preocupen, pueden utilizar la parte trasera del pincel, es decir, la parte opuesta a las cerdas y les va a funcionar de la misma manera.

La idea es tomar la esteca, mojarla en la pintura y hacer dos bolitas en la superficie e irlas distribuyendo por toda la bandeja para crear las cerecitas.

The next step is to paint the cherries onto the flat surface of the tray. For this, I used pink paint to match the colours we’re already using in the room, and I used a round-tipped modelling tool to help me.

If you don’t have this tool at home, don’t worry – you can use the back of the paintbrush, that is, the part opposite the bristles, and it will work just as well.

The idea is to take the paint stick, dip it in the paint, make two little dots on the surface, and spread them across the tray to create the little cherries.

El siguiente paso es crear la ramitas que unen a las cerezas y para esto utilizamos una esteca de punta fina, ustedes pueden utilizar un palito de altura o un palillo y tendrán el mismo resultado.

En este caso yo las hice en color verde menta para continuar la misma paleta de colores que tenemos en la habitación, y lo que hacemos es ubicar la punta de la esteca con pintura verde menta en la cereza y la llevamos hacia arriba haciendo una pequeña curva y la siguiente la hacemos hacia el lado contrario formando una x en la parte superior como pueden ver en las imágenes.

Una vez que todo estuvo seco distribuí algunos puntitos de color rosa por el resto de la bandeja para que no se viesen tanto espacios vacíos y estaba lista esta etapa.

The next step is to create the twigs that hold the cherries in place. To do this, we use a fine-tipped paintbrush; you can use a thin stick or a toothpick and achieve the same result.

In this case, I made them in mint green to continue the same colour scheme we have in the room. What we do is place the tip of the tool, dipped in mint green paint, on the cherry and move it upwards in a slight curve, then make the next stroke in the opposite direction, forming an ‘X’ at the top, as you can see in the pictures.

Once everything was dry, I dotted a few pink dots around the rest of the tray so there weren’t so many empty spaces, and that stage was complete.

En este punto y para finalizar con el proyecto decidí darle un toque especial de brillo y volumen a las cerecitas, y esto lo logré con brillo de uñas y lo apliqué únicamente a la cereza como tal y a los diferentes puntitos distribuidos por la bandeja, y lo que hice fue dejar caer en una superficie plana una gota de brillo y con ayuda de la esteca fina, fui dejándolo caer en las cerezas y en los puntitos y de esta forma está finalizando este trabajo que la verdad a mí me encantó y miren lo bello que se ve en la mesita de noche de mi flaquita.

At this stage, to finish off the project, I decided to add a special touch of shine and volume to the little cherries, and I achieved this using nail varnish, applying it only to the cherries themselves and to the various dots scattered across the tray, What I did was place a drop of glitter on a flat surface and, using the fine spatula, I applied it to the cherries and the little dots. And so this project is finished – I absolutely loved it, and just look how lovely it looks on my little girl’s bedside table.

Como pueden ver es un proyecto que aunque sencillo, ya que la elaboración de la masa es súper fácil, hay que trabajar con mucho cuidado y, sobre todo, cuidar dos cosas que son el tiempo de secado y el lijado para que nuestra bandeja luzca lo más linda posible, así que sea pacientes y detallistas.

As you can see, although this is a simple project—since making the dough is really easy—you need to work very carefully and, above all, pay close attention to two things: the drying time and the sanding, so that your tray looks as lovely as possible. So be patient and pay attention to the details.
