Apple TV continues to deliver high-quality productions. I decided to give this thriller a chance, and—as I always do—if the first episode doesn't hook me, I drop it. Guess what happened? The first episode kept me glued to the screen, and I ended up binge-watching the rest in one go. It is a police thriller centered on a mystery: specifically, a disappearance and the discovery of a young woman's body. There are many series in this genre—some excellent, others merely mediocre—but this Australian production clearly falls into the former category. It isn't because the mystery itself is groundbreaking—on the contrary, a disappearance is a very common trope in these stories—but rather because it tells a captivating tale that moves at an excellent pace. It consists of just six episodes, and from the very beginning, we know exactly who the "dark" figure in the story is. We also discover immediately whether the missing girl is alive or dead. The series gives us these answers right away because the real focus lies in delving into the characters: how they have coped for eleven years with the loss, the guilt, the remorse over what they might have done differently, and all the personal struggles the tragedy brought into their lives. Ian Ridley is the protagonist. He has been battling alcoholism and spiraling downward ever since his three-year-old daughter disappeared eleven years ago. Rage, guilt, frustration, despair... the man is living through a living hell. Once the town's police chief, he now works as an emergency call operator. He is a father who refuses to give up, even though his ex-wife, his other child, and—it seems—everyone else have resigned themselves to the situation. He hasn't. The actor playing the role does an excellent job; he embodies a character who doesn't hesitate to resort to violence if necessary—someone who no longer cares about anything and simply wants to know what happened to his daughter. I can’t even imagine the pain someone feels when facing a tragedy like this. Compounding that is the frustration of finding no answers: a disappearance and a possible murder that defy all logic. Who could have done such a thing? What kind of monster would be capable of it? A stranger? Perhaps the answers are closer than some might imagine. My biggest fear when starting the series was that they would drag out the resolution and fill it with filler episodes. I’m tired of that kind of show. Fortunately, as I mentioned, the first episode provides several answers right away, and the subsequent episodes constantly deliver new information and pick up the pace. The story moves quickly toward solving the mystery, without unnecessary delays or an overload of surprise plot twists. Of course, there are twists, but they aren't the primary device. Many series in this genre use the final minutes to advance the plot while the rest of the episode is pure filler. That isn't the case here, and it’s something worth praising. The story is inspired by a novel by American author Ryan David Jahn. The book is titled *The Dispatcher* and is set in the 1960s. Although the series is based on the novel, it takes a different approach. It was created by Kris Mrksa, an Australian screenwriter with an extensive track record; he has worked on numerous series—so he knows what he’s doing—and that shows in this work. It consists of only six episodes, and I highly recommend watching it. It’s intense and features great performances. It’s available on Apple TV. Let me know in the comments what you thought of the series.
