The Role of Interactive Features in Online Clothing Stores

In e-commerce, especially in the clothing industry, the challenge of replicating the in-store shopping experience online remains significant. Compared to purchasing tickets or electronics, where functionality often outweighs the tactile experience, shopping for clothes cannot touch, feel, and try on garments online. Many clothing websites have implemented features to substitute haptic perception to bridge this gap, enhancing the customer's shopping experience. In this article, I will pick a clothing site, discuss its features that substitute the lack of haptic feedback, and give my thoughts on it.

The clothing website I chose is UNIQLO because it is one of Asia's most popular clothing brands. These are some of the features that help improve the customer's shopping experience:

Size chart and Length guide by height: This feature provides different measurement information for shirt sizes and visual guides for different body heights, aiding in more accurate size selection. As someone who often struggles with online size selection, I found this feature incredibly helpful. The size chart also includes different metrics, accommodating those with various measuring tools.

Images: This feature provides images of the item. I wouldn't say I like this feature because it's very lacking. I would add more images, zoom-in features, and 360 views to improve this feature. One problem with this feature is that some items need more images displayed. They should display the model wearing all different colors of the item. Alongside this, a zoom-in feature would be a great addition so that the user can inspect the stitching and texture of the item. Finally, they should add a 360-degree view of the item to help the customer view its overall design and fit.

Description: This feature provides details of the quality used to make the item. I appreciate this feature because it allows me to make informed decisions about the fabric type. This knowledge is crucial for maintaining the cloth, ensuring it's suitable for my desired use, and most importantly, if I'll be comfortable wearing it.

It is very hard to shop for clothes when you cannot try, feel, and touch it. However, clothing companies today like UNIQLO offer many features that assist the user in the absence of haptic feedback. While these features enhance the user experience, there is still a lot of room for improvement.
