> When South Korean director and screenwriter _**Yeon Sang-ho**_ released the excellent "Train to Busan" ten years ago, he likely had no idea of the standard he had set for his future projects featuring zombies—or, rather, the infected; it was precisely that standard that led to high expectations for the sequel to his blockbuster hit—I’m referring to “Peninsula” (2020), a film that took a very different direction when the action genre took precedence over the drama, resulting in a very simplistic character development; _**Yeon Sang-ho**_ in his new project titled **“Colony”**, where action blends with horror to tell a very simple—yet highly entertaining—story of a group of people who must survive inside a building placed under quarantine due to an unknown outbreak that creates violent and evolved infected individuals.

> In **Colony**, _**Sang-ho**_ didn’t set out to innovate the genre or replicate the success of his most famous film, although it’s true that drama and despair are present, as well as a compelling portrayal of the zombies. At first, I was a bit concerned that the film was two hours long, which made me think the story’s setup might be drawn out, delving into the protagonists’ motivations. But this time, in just 11 minutes or so, each character is briefly introduced so the film can focus on horror and action. This is very well executed: as viewers, we see how the rules the protagonists must follow to survive are established—though in this case, there’s a major twist: those rules keep changing as the movie progresses.

> Right after watching "Train to Busan," I have high expectations for how zombies are portrayed in a South Korean film; in my opinion, they have a great vision of how these creatures might behave, and although their main characteristic is their speed—both in transformation and in attack—I think their behavior is what I appreciate most because they’re so terrifying largely because they’re always extremely difficult to overcome; All these characteristics are present in this film, along with the behavior of zombies acting as part of a colony or swarm. That aspect in particular—though not original—seemed quite fitting for the story to me, as it establishes a major antagonist—again, not a new concept—but one that makes the film’s narrative work very well.

> The inclusion of infected characters and those who must survive perfectly fits the clichés typical of this genre; as I mentioned earlier, the rules for survival evolve and change as the movie progresses; that’s one of the most interesting aspects for creating difficulty, which builds tension and leads to more horror and action scenes. Now, regarding the survivors, there really is a wide variety, which I also appreciate because the film doesn’t focus solely on a single protagonist—instead, there are a good number of characters willing to fight to be saved; I thought it was great that there are so many heroes, as well as the typical characters you’ll end up hating—and in this movie, I can say there are two who, in my opinion, are villains very well written by _**Yeon Sang-ho**_.

> I found **Colony** very entertaining; it has a steady pace, and the simplicity of its story means there’s no need to develop depth in any of the characters. Perhaps that strength also serves as—or turns into—a weakness for the film, especially regarding the story’s protagonists, who, in my opinion, are very weak and easily overshadowed by other characters; that would (surely) be the only negative aspect of a film that, despite not relying on comedy or moments of tension relief, does cleverly offer some humor by (intelligently) poking fun at itself. I’ll say it again: this movie doesn’t introduce anything new, but it does a great job of drawing on the influence of other films to deliver an entertaining experience.
