One of the main requirements is that the plant be native to the country. As a Venezuelan and a native of the Andes, I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to tell you about the frailejón. The frailejón is a plant native to the Venezuelan Andes, also known as the protector of the páramos. # Frailejón: The protector of the Andean paramo. When we travel along the Trans-Andean Highway through the Mérida páramo, we can not only marvel at its immense mountains and dreamlike landscapes, but we can also enjoy a beautiful plant that graces the landscape with its unique characteristics and lovely yellow flowers—especially if we visit in October. On my last visit to the páramo, I was able to take some photos of the frailejón; here’s a view from the highway, where you can see how this endemic plant adorns the entire surrounding area. ![Beige Gray Pastel Modern Aesthetic Minimalist Photo Collage Facebook Cover.gif](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/doriangel/246azteGnoWK7fADWVctH4NWMboM8ugMSCYuNKNjLEDeE9t1MDkEppCPG7s9BhrjLUTxq.gif) The species that grows in the Venezuelan Andes is found in abundance in the Mucubají lagoon; it is the frailejón Espeletia schultzii, an endemic plant that plays a vital role in preserving the ecosystem of this beautiful páramo. What I admire about this plant is its ability to withstand extreme temperatures that sometimes drop below 0 degrees Celsius at night; perhaps this is due to the unique texture of its leaves, which resemble velvet. Furthermore, these plants grow at high altitudes; for example, Mucubají Lagoon is located at approximately 3,625 meters above sea level. During my visit, I saw many frailejones, and on some of them I noticed flowers beginning to bloom. Honestly, I’m tempted to get much closer and touch them, but it’s prohibited—which is excellent because we must protect this beautiful and valuable species. ![Beige Gray Pastel Modern Aesthetic Minimalist Photo Collage Facebook Cover (5).png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/doriangel/23tmBchZYAqpPT54eL4vUPqx1wVhUoRu2rEq55HL5EiS2gGtRKm9tmMYF3PXDb2jFL6L8.png) According to this [web article](https://www.inaturalist.org/es/taxa/336649-Espeletia-schultzii) published by iNaturalist, the frailejón Espeletia schultzii is a herbaceous species in the Asteraceae family. It’s impressive—even though they look small to us, they can grow up to 2 meters tall. But to see them reach that height, we’ll have to wait hundreds of years, since they grow very slowly—just 1 cm per year. As I mentioned earlier, these plants have a velvety texture; their broad leaves grow in rosettes and remind me a lot of succulents, but each leaf is covered in white hairs. A very interesting thing about these plants is that we rarely see their leaves fall off—instead, most of them remain dry, sheltering the new leaves. ![Beige Gray Pastel Modern Aesthetic Minimalist Photo Collage Facebook Cover (6).png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/doriangel/23tGyemK6jveyYgBvJi5iiTqVCSnXXMEXJ5bWc47w6WqW8eLP7wrDrVCi5qNUcwRMzptL.png) When they bloom, the páramo is covered in yellow. Their flowers closely resemble sunflowers and are absolutely beautiful; they generally bloom between October and January, so if you want to see them at their best, this is the best time to visit the páramo. # Why are they so important to the moorland? Without them, this lagoon might not look quite as beautiful. Frailejón plants act like sponges that absorb water—and not only do they absorb it, they channel it so that water can flow through them to the rivers and lagoons in the area. They’re excellent water conservers, as they store as much water as possible during the rainy season and release it during the dry season when drought conditions prevail. Additionally, they prevent soil erosion and help maintain soil moisture, which in turn helps preserve that rich, cool climate throughout most of the year. Now you understand why we shouldn’t touch them, let alone pull them up. ![IMG-20261030-WA0027.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/doriangel/Eqd9Sfncb5koX4S1euKktptM3AdA6DQAg9HzNk3CgiqUm52PvDLvfvuT2KrFTQ8cf5h.jpg) # Medicinal Uses. Since ancient times, frailejón has been used to treat various ailments, especially respiratory conditions such as asthma and colds; it is also commonly used to make creams for joint pain and is used to treat kidney inflammation. In the surrounding villages, you can find frailejón syrups; you can even buy them in some pharmacies. However, as mentioned earlier, its use is strictly regulated because it is a protected plant, and only the dried leaves are used to avoid damaging the plant. # Did you know why it’s called “frailejon”? The origin of the name is quite curious, as it’s believed to stem from the fact that at night, amid the fog, the curved stems of the plants with their flowers made them look like a friar, since their silhouette closely resembled one. ![Beige Gray Pastel Modern Aesthetic Minimalist Photo Collage Facebook Cover (7).png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/doriangel/245Hj5Ag2zSNeUB8WJg7pJzRxCZmRegQG5JvdpvzPym89QMJuByAt9DbuSTZ6b5FFdKLT.png) ![Beige Gray Pastel Modern Aesthetic Minimalist Photo Collage Facebook Cover (8).png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/doriangel/244oUs7ZPw93fYMvua3Ai8DvBMFb5Sbm3iV6NSttRK37MxjEC7Z7AgFkEwv9wMGTobMF7.jpg) https://i.ecency.com/DQmZhwcViYEfHoTbzq2GVH8wkJ2pJ8bHLfR4tFE1bAmQrhN/beige_gray_pastel_modern_aesthetic_minimalist_photo_collage_facebook_cover_10_.png https://i.ecency.com/DQmWSJXitb5T7XgY9ovvmmw6gxgUnbq8o8yGqrwkhFQDp7v/beige_gray_pastel_modern_aesthetic_minimalist_photo_collage_facebook_cover_11_.png I hope you enjoyed this little stroll around the Mucubají Lagoon, where we admired this beautiful plant. It has been a great pleasure to participate in the contest, and I’d like to take this opportunity to invite @leidimarc, @mamaemigrante, @emily22, and @karocont2011 to join this interesting monthly contest. ![IMG-20261030-WA0027.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/doriangel/Eqd9Sfncb5koX4S1euKktptM3AdA6DQAg9HzNk3CgiqUm52PvDLvfvuT2KrFTQ8cf5h.jpg) # Usos medicinales.
