A few days ago, I watched the film *Los Colonos* (The Settlers). It is a Chilean movie that adopts the Western genre to tell a story based on chilling real-life events that took place in the region known as Tierra del Fuego—spanning both Chilean and Argentine territory—during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I want you to keep these dates—the period when the events occurred—in mind, because I will comment on them later. One aspect of the film worth highlighting is the Patagonian landscape chosen as the story's setting. Beyond the beautiful cinematography, the images also convey the uncertainty and violence that characterized that era. At the time, many European settlers traveled there in search of opportunities—driven by a sort of "gold rush" similar to the one in North America—while others settled to make money; though that was not the whole story. The film introduces José Menéndez, a man of Spanish—specifically Asturian—origin. This man, who first moved to Argentina and amassed a fortune, came to be known as the "King of Patagonia." He was also one of the most ruthless figures of the era; he is considered responsible for ordering the extermination of the indigenous population. His hatred toward the indigenous people is starkly portrayed in the film, as are the attitudes of many other foreigners who arrived in Spanish-American lands. I also want to make it clear, dear reader, that the Spanish were not the only ones to arrive in these areas; there were also British, French, and even German settlers. Please remember this as well; later on, I will share some personal reflections on the subject and the timeline. Another character appearing in the film was one of the cruelest hired killers in the service of that son of a bitch, José Menéndez. That wretch was named Alexander MacLennan, and in the film, he proves to be a truly repulsive individual: a vile murderer guilty of a massacre against the Selk'nam people (also known as the Ona). Not a single member of that indigenous population remains; they were truly exterminated. The film portrays one of the most infamous massacres committed by that bastard nicknamed "Chancho Colorado." The film's pacing is quite slow, though not boring; the visuals are engaging enough to hold our attention. Of course, a somewhat brisker pace would have been welcome, given that the director intended to make a Western. It also has a rather somber tone, as the events depicted are truly barbaric, and as a viewer, one naturally empathizes with those suffering under the oppression of established powers. This is where I wish to express a very personal opinion. Various film critics of a certain ideological bent have praised the film and used it to attack Hispanic heritage, giving free rein to a hatred that has persisted since the discovery of the Americas. Those who enjoy attacking the Discovery tend to resort to the same rhetoric learned through ceaseless indoctrination. But let me tell you something: the Discovery took place in 1492. The events in the film occurred 400 years later. Furthermore, Chile's independence was declared in February 1818—decades before the events shown in the movie. I am among those who believe that independence brought no benefits to Latin American countries. It was all an Anglo-Saxon plot to completely destroy the Spanish Empire. Four hundred years had passed since the Discovery, and indigenous populations still existed. Who was it that massacred them? Settlers who arrived *after* independence. These were supposedly free and independent nations; However, the very governments elected after that hard-won independence were complicit in all the subsequent massacres. We must be very clear about this so as not to fall prey to anti-Hispanic rhetoric. It is true that the so-called "King of Patagonia" was of Spanish origin, but there were also English people—and individuals of other nationalities—wreaking havoc four centuries later. It was specifically the Anglo-Saxons who exterminated indigenous populations; one need only look at the United States. In contrast, racial mixing occurred in Spanish American countries; we are the heirs to that blend of indigenous peoples, white Spaniards, and Black people. Many of the things Latin Americans love and that define our countries stem from that mixture—from the cultural fusion resulting from the discovery. Religion, cuisine, social structure... everything. We are the product of that amalgamation. We should not disown it. Were there conflicts and deaths? Yes; such is history .of humanity. A dominant empire takes control of lands, and so on. If we start hating Spain for that, just imagine—we’d have to hate every ancient empire that did the same thing in the past, all the way back to the dawn of the known world. But this nonsense of playing the victim today—when we didn't even live through that era—is ridiculous. It’s part of our history. Yet, there are plenty of idiots indoctrinated by leftist rhetoric. They didn't live through that time, and the people of that era certainly weren't thinking about their descendants in 2026—just as our descendants in the year 3000 won't remember us. That’s simply how human history works. Simple. I recommend this film if you want to learn about that historical period—specifically regarding an independent Chile and Argentina. Remember, they were no longer Spanish viceroyalties by then; it was precisely *after* they became independent nations that foreigners committed true atrocities against the indigenous population, going so far as to completely exterminate them—as depicted in the film. Look it up, watch it, and let me know what you think in the comments.
