Una oportunidad para Petra 😻 An opportunity for Petra

Hace aproximadamente dos semanas, apareció un gato en un terreno en construcción abandonado que queda frente a mi casa. Lo vimos un día desde el balcón y nos preguntamos cómo se había metido ahí, ya que las paredes son altas. Pasó varios días en ese lugar, un día lo veíamos, otros no, y al parecer no podía salir de allí. Luego con unos binoculares vimos que estaba herido en un costado, quizás por eso no podía, porque hemos visto otro gato que baja y se sube por un lado donde hay unos objetos acumulados.

About two weeks ago, a cat appeared on an abandoned construction site across the street from my house. We saw it one day from the balcony and wondered how it had gotten in there, since it has high walls. It stayed there for several days; we'd see it some days, not others, and it seemed unable to get out. Then, using binoculars, we saw that it was injured on its side, which might explain why it couldn't get out, because we've seen another cat going up and down a side where some objects have been piled up.

Como el terreno es de un chino que conocemos, habíamos pensado pedirle que nos abriera para buscarlo, pero al día siguiente el gato había logrado pasarse al estacionamiento del pequeño centro comercial que queda detrás, entonces decidimos ir y ver qué podíamos hacer para ayudarlo. Se la pasaba escondido detrás de unos estantes viejos y sólo salía a pedir comida a unos vendedores de pescado que guardan su mercancía allí, pero vimos que no fueron amables con él. También vimos unos niños correteándolo, así que no estaba nada seguro allí.

Since the property belongs to a Chinese man we know, we had thought about asking him to let us in so we could look for him, but the next day the cat had managed to get into the parking lot of the small shopping center behind it, so we decided to go and see what we could do to help him. He spent all his time hiding behind some old shelves and only came out to beg for food from some fish vendors who keep their merchandise there, but we saw that they weren't very friendly to him. We also saw some children chasing him, so he wasn't safe there at all.

Mi hermana y yo fuimos al día siguiente temprano en la mañana. Le llevamos comida, agua y algo para ponerle en la herida. Resulta ser que era hembra, y apenas nos acercamos, salió. Pobrecita, tenía mucha hambre.

My sister and I went early the next morning. We brought him food, water, and something to put on her wound. It turned out she was a female, and as soon as we approached, she came out. Poor thing, she was so hungry.

Luego vimos su herida de cerca, aunque no sangraba, tenía la piel a carne viva. Quién sabe qué le pasó... Mi hermana había llevado azul de metileno, que sirve para secar heridas, y le puso un poco.

Then we saw her wound up close; although it wasn't bleeding, the skin was raw. Who knows what happened to her... My sister had brought methylene blue, which is used to dry wounds, and she put some on it.

Queríamos sacarla de allí, pero en casa tenemos varios gatos y poco espacio, así que no nos la llevamos ese día. La vigilé desde el balcón durante esa tarde, mi hermana preguntó a varias personas si podían resguardarla temporalmente, pero no conseguimos a nadie. Me angustiaba verla así, entonces al día siguiente bien temprano, sin pensarlo mucho fui y la traje a la casa 😄.

We wanted to get her out of there, but we have several cats at home and not much space, so we didn't take her that day. I watched her from the balcony that afternoon. My sister asked several people if they could take her in temporarily, but we couldn't find anyone. It distressed me to see her like that, so the next day, very early, without thinking twice, I went and brought her home 😄.

La gata se mostró súper cariñosa y dócil, y al observarla mejor empezamos a sospechar que podría estar preñada, o que estaba lactando, porque sus tetillas se veían grandes. Mi hermana la bañó, le sacó unas pulgas y la pusimos en unos de los balcones, aislada de nuestros gatos.

The cat was incredibly affectionate and docile, and upon closer inspection, we began to suspect she might be pregnant or nursing, as her nipples looked large. My sister bathed her, removed some fleas, and we placed her on one of the balconies, away from our cats.

Al día siguiente mi hermana la llevó al veterinario, y efectivamente está preñada, pero como tiene poco tiempo de gestación, el doctor dijo que es posible esterilizarla en este momento.

The next day my sister took her to the vet, and she is indeed pregnant, but since she is only a short time into her pregnancy, the doctor said it is possible to spay her at this time.

Mi mamá al verla dijo que le quedaba bien el nombre de Petra, y así la llamamos. Mi hermana tiene un amigo que al parecer la va a adoptar luego de su esterilización, una noticia excelente porque es una pena ver gatos vulnerables sin hogar.

When my mom saw her, she said the name Petra suited her, and that's what we named her. My sister has a friend who's apparently going to adopt her after she's spayed, which is excellent news because it's such a shame to see vulnerable cats without a home.

Ya tiene poco más de una semana en casa. No sabemos qué le pudo haber pasado a esta hermosa gata ni cómo apareció por aquí. Quizás la abandonaron, o quizás se perdió... Lo cierto es que ahora estamos ayudando a Petra para que tenga una nueva oportunidad, una vida mejor. Esperemos que todo vaya bien 😊.

She's been home for a little over a week now. We don't know what could have happened to this beautiful cat or how she ended up here. Maybe she was abandoned, or maybe she got lost... The truth is, we're now helping Petra to have a new opportunity, a better life. Let's hope everything goes well 😊.
