Bendecido día, espero que te encuentres muy bien hoy quiero reseñar una linda experiencia que viví ayer con la música.

Desde hace varios meses estoy estudiando música en un núcleo del sistema de orquesta donde asisto con regularidad a las actividades que organizan. Esta semana y parte de la que viene se estarán dando recitales por cátedra para evaluar el avance de cada músico en su instrumento en el primer trimestre del año, ayer fue el primer recital de maracas y arpa.

For several months now, I have been studying music at a centre within the orchestra system, where I regularly attend the activities they organise. This week and part of next week, recitals will be held by department to assess each musician’s progress on their instrument in the first term of the year; yesterday was the first maracas and harp recital.

En la presentación de ayer, los jóvenes estudiantes de las maracas dieron cada uno una exposición sobre las mismas, mencionando su elaboración y técnicas de crear sonidos con las posiciones de mano, todos bajo la orientación de su profesor Carlos Gil, mencionaron los tipos de joropos y aprendí que existen varios más de los que yo sabía entre ellos están el más conocido el joropo llanero siendo uno de los artistas con más trayectoria y fama mundial Reinaldo Armas; también está el joropo oriental, el central que comúnmente llamamos joropo mirandino o aragüeño siendo lo correcto llamarlo joropo central que incluye todas las regiones del centro, y un nuevo joropo que yo no conocía como el de la Colonia Tovar, este joropo llamado coloniero es una variante que fusiona ritmos con influencia europea de los inmigrantes alemanes, también se desarrolla con los instrumentos bases que son el cuatro, las maracas y el arpa agregándole otro instrumento originario de la cultura alemana como es el acordeón.

The orchestra system’s mission is to formalise the study of my country’s folk music, as it forms part of humanity’s intangible heritage; that is why the Alma Llanera programme was launched, with the aim of formally teaching the instruments, music and history behind the joropo.

At yesterday’s presentation, the young maracas students each gave a talk on the instrument, discussing its construction and the techniques for producing sounds through hand positions, all under the guidance of their teacher Carlos Gil. They mentioned the different types of joropo, and I learnt that there are several more than I was aware of; amongst them is the best-known, the joropo llanero, with Reinaldo Armas being one of the most experienced and world-renowned artists; there is also the joropo oriental, the central joropo which we commonly call joropo mirandino or aragüeño—though the correct term is joropo central, which encompasses all the central regions—and a new type of joropo I was unfamiliar with, such as that of Colonia Tovar; this joropo, known as ‘coloniero’, is a variant that blends rhythms influenced by German immigrants; it is also performed with the core instruments—the cuatro, maracas and harp—to which another instrument of German origin, the accordion, is added.

En cada recital aprendo cosas nuevas, es tanta la información que siento que me falta memoria para recordar todo. En el recital de maracas entendí lo importante de este instrumento en nuestra música y que todo tiene su técnica. Existe una posición que usa las manos que es de arrastre y su sonido asemeja a la escoba que usa en los llanos por eso su nombre es de escobillao, otra cosa interesante que aprendí es el origen de la palabra JOROPO que a veces pasamos desapercibido los mismos venezolanos, esta palabra significa BAILE, MÚSICA Y FIESTA lo que quiere decir que el género musical joropo fue creado para la fiesta, el baile y la alegría. No es una música solo para oír como lo es la clásica, nuestra música invita al canto, baile y a la fiesta, sello de nuestra cultura y lo que nos caracteriza como personas alegres.

Las maracas son un instrumento que está casado con el cuatro, ambos se fusionan para armonizar las melodías. Disfruté mucho de esta presentación.

At every recital I learn new things; there is so much information that I feel my memory isn’t enough to remember it all. At the maracas recital, I understood how important this instrument is in our music and that everything has its own technique. There is a hand position known as ‘arrastre’ (dragging), and its sound resembles the broom used on the plains, which is why it is called ‘escobillao’. Another interesting thing I learnt is the origin of the word ‘JOROPO’, which we Venezuelans ourselves sometimes overlook; this word means DANCE, MUSIC AND PARTY, which means that the joropo musical genre was created for partying, dancing and joy. It is not music just to listen to, as classical music is; our music invites singing, dancing and partying, the hallmark of our culture and what characterises us as cheerful people.

The maracas are an instrument that goes hand in hand with the cuatro; the two blend together to harmonise the melodies. I really enjoyed this performance.

Luego de las maracas comenzó la cátedra de arpa, teniendo un único estudiante en este instrumento, pues el arpa requiere de mucha dedicación, en mi comunidad por el momento solo se ha inscripción en esta cátedra un estudiante. Él junto a su profesor Carlos Gil, que es el mismo profesor de maracas, guitarra, cuatro y de casi todos los instrumentos en el núcleo 🤣, ya que es el director de la orquesta, un joven supertalentoso. Ambos presentaron la cátedra de Arpa el profesor acompañando con cuatro, y nos deleitaron con la obra de caballo viejo creada por el maestro Simón Díaz, una canción que ha sido versionada en muchas formas, traducida a varios idiomas e interpretada por muchos cantantes famosos.

After the maracas, the harp class began. There is only one student taking this instrument, as the harp requires a great deal of dedication; in my community, only one student has enrolled in this class so far. He was accompanied by his teacher, Carlos Gil, who also teaches maracas, guitar, cuatro and almost every other instrument at the centre 🤣, as he is the orchestra’s conductor – a super-talented young man. Both presented the harp class, with the teacher accompanying on the cuatro, and they delighted us with the piece ‘Caballo Viejo’ composed by the maestro Simón Díaz, a song that has been covered in many different ways, translated into several languages and performed by many famous singers.

Esta tarde fue muy placentera para mí por la información y la música, estos recitales están abiertos al público general y asisten estudiantes del núcleo, padres, representantes y cualquier persona de la comunidad que desee asistir.
