—Solo hoy... no me falles.

Respiré hondo, tomé mis pertenencias y comencé a pedalear.

—No te preocupes... hoy llegarás temprano.

The Dark Bicycle

After searching for a long time, I had finally found a job opening.

It was the opportunity I had been waiting for months, and I was not willing to lose it by arriving late. The problem was that the place was several miles away from my home, and the only way I could get there was by riding my old bicycle, the same one that always left me stranded because the chain kept coming off.

That morning, I woke up earlier than usual. I carefully put the chain back in place, adjusted it several times, and checked every part of the bicycle as if my future depended on it. Before leaving, I looked at it one last time and whispered:

—Just today... don’t fail me.

I took a deep breath, grabbed my belongings, and started pedaling.

At first, everything went better than I expected. Minutes passed and the bicycle kept moving without a single problem. As I traveled along the road, I couldn’t stop being surprised that the chain was still in place.

It was strange.

Too strange.

Curiosity eventually overcame my relief, and I looked down to make sure everything was still right.

That was when I felt the blood run cold.

The bicycle had no chain.

I quickly looked up and tried to brake, but it didn’t respond. The speed began to increase on its own. The pedals started spinning faster and faster, and the wind hit my face so strongly that I could barely keep my eyes open.

At that moment, I felt an icy breath brushing against the back of my neck.

And a voice, right behind me, whispered:

—Don’t worry... today you’ll arrive early.
