DISCOVERING BÁRCENA RESERVOIR NEAR PONFERRADA

Today I’m taking you back to Spain again – this time to the region of León, not far from the town of Ponferrada and Cubilos del Sil. That is where I found the BÁRCENA RESERVOIR a large artificial lake created on the Sil River.

I had a delivery nearby and was simply looking for a quiet place to spend the weekend. I had two days only for me 😀 While browsing the map I noticed a body of water and a nearby parking spot – perfect for me, I thought. Quiet, peaceful, no crowds… just how I like it!

Well, almost perfect 😅 As it turned out, the parking actually belonged to a company I wasn’t delivering to. The security guard kindly informed me that it was private property but he was nice enough to let me stay till Monday anyway. So yes, I spent my whole weekend there with a view over the lake, surrounded by silence and autumn air. 🍂

There weren’t any tourists. No people at all, actually. Just me and the sound of water....

So, what is the BÁRCENA RESERVOIR?
It is an artificial lake created in the 1960s by building a dam on the Sil River, which flows into the Miño. The main purpose of the dam was hydroelectric energy and water management and even today it plays an very important role in the region’s electricity supply.

The reservoir also helps regulate the river’s flow and provides water for irrigation. Its surface area is over 900 hectares and it can hold up to 342 million cubic meters of water!!

Today it’s not just functional . It’s also used for sailing, picnics and nature walks. Even if the weather wasn’t perfect that day, it was a little bit cold, I still enjoyed every minute of my lakeside walk. 🙂

PL:

Dziś znów zabieram Was do Hiszpanii – tym razem do regionu León, niedaleko miejscowości Ponferrada i Cubillos del Sil.

Nie było tam żadnych turystów. Właściwie nikogo tam nie było. Tylko ja i dźwięk wody...

Czym tak właściwie jest ZBIORNIK BÁRCENA?
To sztuczne jezioro utworzone w latach 60.

Zbiornik reguluje też przepływ rzeki i dostarcza wodę do nawadniania pól.
