Book Review: Satine by Ika Natasha

Ika Natasha is one of the popular authors in Indonesia. I don't know how she started her career as an author, but I knew her novel from a movie that was adapted. Since then, I have known her and have never been absent from watching her movies, even though I have never read her novels, and this is my first novel by her. I bought this just because I need romance novel to accompany me, I have a romance novel on my pocket.

Satine

This book tells the story of Satine and Ash, who meet at a matchmaking agency to chat. During their meeting, Satine and Ash feel a connection, and they make a pact, like a date, but not a date. It's like a date without the status, just a way to spend time together and chat.

Spending time together makes Ash and Satine feel connected, but their busy lives unknowingly push them apart until they meet again abroad, where they become close again.

But, as Ash and Satine grew closer, one thing made them increasingly withdraw: confusion about their own feelings. They wanted to be honest, but they were afraid they were the wrong person. Until Satine suffered a mild stroke and had to be hospitalized, Ash knew he wasn't worthy of her. To Ash, he was just like his hated father, and he buried his feelings for Satine. Likewise, Satine knew she liked Ash, but she didn't know why he was avoiding her. She was unsure.

It was a truly difficult adult relationship.

Satine is a novel with Ika Natasha's pattern—I mean the pattern repeats itself from previous novels that have been adapted into films. The main characters meet by chance, feel compatible, then feel incompatible with each other, drift apart, are confused, and then confused by their respective feelings. Yes, the ending is indeed happy, but still, the pattern is always about a man who feels unworthy of the woman he loves. Yes, adult romance is indeed complicated.

I bought this novel because I really wanted to read Ika Natasha's novel before it was made into a film and then compare it with the film version. Then this novel made me understand that Ika Natasha's storytelling is very strong—but in my humble opinion, the story idea is very classic—nothing special. I really like her storytelling style—typical metropop, easy to read, but that's all, because it is written from POV 1, it feels very melodramatic.

Anyway... I rate this book with 2,5 from 5 start; Too Mellow!
