9 March 2026 @marinnewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 3037 : Without Suspicio.!
This is my post on #freewriters3037 #dailyprompt without suspicion hosted by @marinnewest's.
The orange glow of the sunset over Uyo cast long shadows across the red earth of Oron Road. Aniefiok and Ekemini walked side-by-side, the silence between them heavy not with tension, but with the comfortable weight of twenty years of shared secrets.
In a city where gossip travels faster than a Keke Napep, their bond was an anomaly. People whispered that Ekemini’s sudden promotion at the ministry was "luck," or perhaps something darker. But Aniefiok never asked. When Ekemini returned home late with a brand-new laptop and a weary smile, Aniefiok simply placed a plate of steaming Afang soup in front of him.
"You look like you've been wrestling with the governor," Aniefiok joked, his eyes bright with genuine warmth.
"Just the usual paperwork, brother," Ekemini replied, exhaling a week’s worth of stress.
There was no peering into locked drawers, no checking of phone screens left face-up on the table. Their trust wasn't a conscious choice; it was the atmosphere they breathed. When Aniefiok needed capital for his startup, Ekemini handed over his savings without a receipt or a timeline. He didn't see a risk; he saw his brother.
As the streetlights flickered to life, illuminating the bustling stalls of Ibom Plaza, they shared a roasted corn from a roadside vendor. In a world built on "shine your eyes," they chose to close theirs and simply lean on one another. Between them, suspicion wasn't just absent—it was an impossible language they had never bothered to learn.
Would you like me to expand this into a longer short story with more dialogue between the brothers?
