Manchester United look set to make their first signing of the summer, and it is a move that could bring some much-needed strength to the midfield.

Reports suggest that the club has agreed a deal with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson. The transfer fee is worth an initial £34 million, with an extra £3.8 million in possible add-ons. The 26-year-old is expected to sign a four-year contract, with the option of extending it by another year.
I personally think this is a smart move by United. Though Ederson may not be the type of player who makes headlines every week or scores spectacular goals, but he is the kind of hardworking midfielder every successful team needs. During his time at Atalanta, he built a reputation as a player who never stops running, fights for every ball, and helps keep the team balanced.
What even makes this transfer more interesting is the fact that Manchester United have reportedly been monitoring him for quite some time. This doesn't look like a panic buy or a last-minute decision. It seems like the club has identified a player who fits their plans and decided now is the right time to bring him in.
The move also makes sense when you consider the possible changes happening in United's midfield. Casemiro is expected to leave, while there are also doubts about Manuel Ugarte's future also. If both players depart, then the team will need fresh energy and reliable options in the middle of the pitch.
For me, Ederson's biggest strength is his consistency. He may not be the kind of player that always grab the spotlight, but he does the dirty work that often goes unnoticed. Those are the players fans usually appreciate the most after watching them week in and week out.
Of course, signing one midfielder won't solve all of Manchester United's problems. Though reports indicate that the club is still looking to bring in another midfielder before the transfer window closes, which shows that more changes could be on the way.
As a football lovers, I am curious to see how Ederson adapts to the Premier League. The English game is faster and more physical, but based on what he has shown in Italy, he certainly has the qualities needed to succeed.
Now the focus shifts to his medical and the official announcement. If everything goes according to plan, Ederson could become the first piece of a new chapter at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick.
