[ENG/ESP] The magic of a living courtyard in times of drought
Starting the week with renewed energy is, without a doubt, one of the best feelings we can have. When the body rests and the mind clears, everything seems to flow more smoothly, as if life itself were giving us a little nudge to get off to a good start. I sincerely hope your week has also begun in the best possible way—with good news, peace of mind, and the motivation to face whatever comes your way.
For me, this week looks quite promising. I have several matters to attend to, work commitments, and some pending tasks that require organization and a positive attitude. Luckily, I’m coming off a very relaxed Sunday at home—a day that allowed me to recharge my batteries while tending to my plants and spending time with my family, which is what I enjoy most.
Early in the morning, my husband started working on our car’s engine. He loves mechanics, and when it comes to our vehicle, he prefers to do it himself, with patience and dedication. Our son went out to hang out with some friends, so the house was quiet, just the two of us. That peaceful atmosphere always feels special.
Un inicio de semana con energías renovadas es, sin duda, una de las mejores sensaciones que podemos tener. Cuando el cuerpo descansa y la mente se despeja, todo parece fluir con más suavidad, como si la vida misma nos diera un pequeño empujón para comenzar con buen pie. Espero sinceramente que su semana también haya empezado de la mejor manera, con buenas noticias, tranquilidad y motivación para enfrentar lo que venga.
Para mí, esta semana promete bastante. Tengo varios asuntos por atender, compromisos laborales y algunas tareas pendientes que requieren organización y buena disposición. Por suerte, vengo de un domingo muy relajado en casa, un día que me permitió recargar energías mientras me ocupaba de mis plantas y compartía tiempo con mi familia, que es lo que más disfruto.
Desde temprano, mi esposo comenzó a montar el motor de nuestro carro. A él le encanta la mecánica, y cuando se trata de nuestro vehículo, prefiere hacerlo él mismo, con paciencia y dedicación. Nuestro hijo salió a compartir con unas amigas, así que la casa quedó en silencio, solo para nosotros dos. Ese ambiente tranquilo siempre se siente especial.
The first thing I did was fill the birdbath we have in the backyard. It was completely dry when I woke up, and I don’t like that to happen, because the birds suffer terribly during this severe drought. At least they know they can drink and cool off in our backyard. Some even bathe, and when we’re outside, we get to enjoy a real show; thrushes, doves, cardinallets, turpials, and even woodpeckers come by. Each with its own color, song, and personality. The thrushes are the most trusting; they almost seem like part of the family.
Lo primero que hice fue echar agua al abrevadero de aves que tenemos en el patio. Amaneció completamente seco, y eso no me gusta que pase, porque en esta sequía tan fuerte las aves sufren muchísimo. Al menos saben que en nuestro patio pueden beber y refrescarse. Algunas incluso se bañan, y cuando estamos afuera disfrutamos de un verdadero espectáculo; llegan tordos, palomitas, cardenalitos, turpiales y hasta carpinteros. Cada uno con su color, su canto y su personalidad. Los tordos son los más confiados, casi parecen parte de la familia.
After that, I spent some time tending to my plants. Despite the severe drought, we’re keeping them alive with whatever little water we can set aside for them. And it’s so satisfying to see them bloom.
Después me dediqué a organizar mis plantas. A pesar de la sequía brutal, las mantenemos con el poquito de agua que podemos reservar para ellas. Y qué satisfacción da verlas florecer.
They’re very easy-to-grow plants. The cherry tomatoes are already bearing fruit, the scallions we planted a week ago have sprouted, and we’re just waiting for the ginger to finish sprouting—it’s always a bit slower. Although we have plenty of land to plant in, for now we prefer to grow them in pots until this dry spell passes.
Son plantas muy agradecidas. Los tomates cherry ya están dando frutos, el cebollín que sembramos hace una semana ya brotó, y solo falta que el jengibre termine de despertar, que siempre es más lento. Aunque tenemos bastante terreno para sembrar, por ahora preferimos hacerlo en recipientes hasta que pase esta temporada tan seca.
The anise plant also has fruits—they're a bit small, but there they are, growing little by little.
La planta de anón también tiene frutos, un poco pequeños, pero ahí van, creciendo poco a poco.
That same day, I picked some passion fruit, so we’re guaranteed to have fresh juice this week. Nothing compares to eating what you grow yourself; it gives you a sense of pride and affection, because we know where it comes from and how lovingly it’s been cared for.
Ese mismo día coseché unas parchitas, así que esta semana tendremos jugo garantizado. Nada se compara con consumir lo que uno mismo cultiva; da una sensación de orgullo y cariño, porque sabemos de dónde viene y con qué amor se cuida.
After tending to my plants, I went to the kitchen to make something everyone at home loves: chicken and rice and cheese-filled guitar-shaped empanadas. I love spoiling them when I’m home. Cooking relaxes me, makes me happy, and brings me closer to my family.
Después de atender mis plantas, me fui a la cocina a preparar algo que todos aman en casa; arroz con pollo y empanadas de guitarras con queso. Me encanta consentirlos cuando estoy en casa. Cocinar me relaja, me alegra y me conecta con los míos.
After we finished eating, I sat on the porch to chat and enjoy the cool breeze that always blows through that part of the house. That’s how our Sunday went: surrounded by plants, family love, and delicious food. A simple day, but full of those little moments that make life more beautiful.
Al terminar de comer, me senté en el portal a conversar y disfrutar de esa brisa fresca que siempre corre por esa parte de la casa. Así transcurrió nuestro domingo; entre plantas, amor familiar y deliciosa comida. Un día sencillo, pero lleno de esos pequeños momentos que hacen la vida más bonita.
