Steem Monsters Official 1500 SBD Writing Contest Announcement!
Steem Monsters is looking for Writers to help create the backstory for the Steem Monsters world with a 1500 SBD Writing Contest!
This is pretty exciting. To our knowlege, this is the largest reward for a writing contest on Steem so far!
Steem Monsters is a collectible trading card game built on the Steem Blockchain. Players have summoners and monsters (and will eventually have items too) they can use to fight one another in the grand tournament and in the campaign setting. We need help building the campaign setting. Who are the monsters? Who are the summoners? What is the Splinterlands? Who said the Prophecy? We need you to help us flesh all of this out.
To be clear one of the most important aspects of this game is the fantasy lore of the game....and we want to make sure it's awesome while also involving the Steemit community in its creation!
The Process
The setting of the Steem Monsters world is called The Splinterlands.
The overall story arc is that the world was once whole, then became splintered, and the prophecy states that it will become whole again.
There are 6 Splinter groups based on their Elemental Color:
Red, Blue, Green, White, Black, and Gold (recently changed to purple).
Each Elemental Color of the game (Splinter group) will have its own writing team.
We have already begun the process of creating teams in the Steem Monsters Discord so if you are interested in taking part of this contest then head over and pick which color you want to write for, then join or create a team. Announce your Splinter selection in the Discord group and Aggroed or a mod will assign you the "writer" role and the Splinter color role of your choice.
Repeating: At this stage all you technically have to do to start is join the Discord, and request the writer and Splinter color role. Then find a group to join/create to work with.
Each writing team should have 4-5 people (you can have more or less but it isn't recommended. Too few is a lot of work. Too many and it's a lot of voices to coordinate). If more than 1 team is writing for a Splinter they are competing to have their template accepted.
The gold team is currently locked and pledged to secrecy on some plot elements. We'll show off their template in a week from now ahead of the other colors to provide further inspiration and a little more to work off of from other Splinters.
This week we will be finalizing the teams and making sure each team understands the Campaign Setting Process as well as the Steem Monsters Splinter Template.
There will be 2 Parts to this contest.
- Part 1 will be the backstory for each Splinter
- Part 2 will be the merging of these stories to create interaction between the splinter groups as well as overall cohesiveness
The scheduled layout of the contest is as follows:
- The Official Contest for each Splinter group will begin on Monday, June 25th
- The Finalists selection begins on Monday, July 2nd
- Part 2 of the contest begins near Monday, July 9nd - the merging of the finalist's stories
- The backstory will be completed on Monday, July 16th
Judging
The teams will be judged by @aggroed, @yabapmatt, and @isaria (we may invite others as well)
Judging is based on completeness of the template and cohesion of the Splinter around central values and a culture that seems well thought out.
The Prize!
The Prize for Part 1 of this contest is 1500 SBD!
There are 6 Splinter groups (Red, Blue, Green, White, Black, and Gold)
The winning writing teams from each group will be awarded 250 SBD.
We will announce the Prize for Part 2 of this contest when it begings on Monday July 9th. We're still determining the scope of work necessary to start merging independant groups into a collective timeline.

The lore begins with Fruit Daddy; the Earth God who bears the fruit that sustain all the monsters on Earth.
When monsters were interviewed for their particular position in the game they were asked, "Who's your daddy?" They each looked at the interviewer and begrudgingly replied, "FruitDaddy".

Quite interesting, while taking a look at the given names of the cards, I guess that it will be quite a difficult task to put a good lore together that will fit with every single one of them. However, having fractured worlds as "Splinters" in one world can be a promising story to tell.

Not sure how a team of unrelated creative writers is supposed to work together to make a finished project on time. Who gets to decide which writers' ideas get used for a color? Will they decide kindly in a democratic way, or will the strongest personalities overrun the decisions to kill off the idea they can't take credit for? I just don't understand how this could magically organize itself on a discord server without a team lead ultimately making all the creative decision and writing the final outline themselves. Maybe that is what you had in mind. I don't know.

If you would like to write without a group, there are also weekly fantasy back stories on each of the characters. Go back and check the feed for @steemmonsters and you can see which one they are on for the week!
If you would like to write a template for the backstory of an actual color (splinter group), I supposed you could always start your own group and not allow anyone in. But it is not recommended. Just let @aggroed know!

I just found out about this project last night through @aggroed channel and my brain wheels have been turning non-stop ever since.
1st off, I would like to try my hand contributing as a writer. Expansive fiction like Wheel of Time, Malazan, Last Kingdom series, Fire & Ice are some of my favorite stories and I've absorbed hundreds of hours of study in mythology, shamanism type practices and the like over the past decade or so. I think I could provide some unique input to the project in this regard. Count on seeing me over in the discord rooms as soon as I can carve out some time and if any team is looking for more writers don't be shy about contacting me.
2nd, I've been mulling over what I think is a unique blockchain powered business model that might be interesting look into. I describe it as a decentralized digital arts studio and talk more in terms of animated videos than card games, but any form of collaborative artistic endeavor could possibly benefit from it.
