Feathered Sunday - Sandhill Crane Nest and Other Sightings
I tried posting for #featheredfriday but got too many error 500s so now we get a #featheredsunday

The first sighting I thought was a bunch of washed up reeds until I noticed a little red spot.

Turns out the sandhills are nesting and soon babies will be hatching. Even their back feathers look like old washed up cat tails. Good camouflage from the coyotes.

I also saw plenty of bluebirds out. This one was looking for caterpillars on the early spring buds.

Sadly most didn't stay for closer shots so all I got were they far away shots.

Tree swallows and bluebirds compete for nesting boxes. These guys are good posers and will stay still for closer shots.

This one claimed a box already and has to guard it from sparrows and bluebirds.

The little tiny spec is a red-winged blackbird. They are all over the place fighting each other over reed territory. They sure make a racket of noise around any of these wetland areas.

The goldfinches are starting to get their mating coloring. Soon this male will have a nice black face and will be even brighter. Or maybe not, perhaps it is just a juvenile and will have to wait next year for a mate.
That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
Great shots! :)

I miss the more colorful birds we had in the Midwest, like those goldfinches and red winged blackbirds. Other than the mountain bluebird, they trend toward drab browns here.
Yeah we have all the primary colors here, bluejays, cardinals, goldfinches and we even have some invasive monk parakeets that are green that nest on telephone poles around here. The brown ones have nice songs like the hermit thrush here.
Great captures! we have a bluebird pair hanging about that we are hoping will nest in one of our birdhouses 🤞 I saw a goldfinch last week but they are not as common as they will be later. Also saw some swallows out over the lake today. Spring is here! at last
Finally its warm again. We got numerous cold snaps even up to last week. Now its finally time for all the birds to get busy.
Thanks :-)
