Musical Monday: El Último de la Fila. Antología (Spn / Eng)
Greetings—today is Monday, October 19, 2026. I hope that happiness remains a constant in everyone’s life this coming week, and that prosperity and synchronicity accompany you all. A few days ago, I was going through my things and came across a CD I had forgotten about—even though I really like it—so I decided to bring it along for this MUSICAL MONDAY initiative, a space hosted by @eugelys.
This album was a gift from my daughter many years ago. She knows how much I love EL ÚLTIMO DE LA FILA—a Spanish band—and when she saw this CD, she gave it to me. I already own a vinyl record by them, which I believe I’ve written about before; regardless, today I want to share this gem with you. It’s something truly valuable that deserves to be remembered—the songs created by Manolo García and Quimi Portet (the two members of this duo) are genuinely beautiful and poetic, and this album is—and is titled—"ANTOLOGÍA"

As you can see, this compact disc was released in 2004 by the record label EMI Colombia and was manufactured in Colombia for the Venezuelan market. It is a compilation album featuring 20 tracks—a mix of studio and live recordings. The cover shows both musicians, Manolo García and Quimi Portet (in a photograph taken many years ago). Inside, the disc itself has a very minimalist design, and the back cover lists the songs (which are also printed on the reverse side of the CD).

Upon opening the cover, you’ll find an engaging write-up about the band by Álvaro González Villamarín—known as “El Profe”—a journalist and broadcaster from Bogotá. I enjoy almost all of these tracks, but I will share only my three personal favorites. With that said, let’s look at my three song choices for today.

Mis canciones para este Musical Monday / My songs for this Musical Monday
My first entry for this MUSICAL MONDAY is “CUANDO EL MAR TE TENGA”, a gem, with a truly unique melody that blends rock with flamenco, resulting in a beautiful and surprising song. Furthermore, the lyrics bear the unmistakable signature of EL ÚLTIMO DE LA FILA; if I recall correctly, it was one of the first songs I ever heard by this band on the radio. I really love it—it’s an ode to love, featuring several intriguing metaphors. Here is the official video for the song.
My second song for today is the exquisite “QUERIDA MILAGROS”—a beautiful, profound piece about love, set against the backdrop of a war zone. In it, a soldier writes daily letters to his girlfriend, Milagros. The song builds in intensity, capturing the desperation, fear, and sorrow of the soldier, Adrián, who is eventually discovered by his comrades—dead—on the battlefield. I’ve included the official audio for this gem below; it is a piece that, without a doubt, stirs the emotions in a deeply moving way.
And to wrap up this very special MUSICAL MONDAY, I’m sharing the beautiful song “LÁPIZ Y TINTA”—a track masterfully defined by its drums and guitars (both acoustic and electric). I love everything about “LÁPIZ Y TINTA”: not just the music, but the lyrics as well, which are filled with poetic metaphors. It’s a song I’ve sung many times and one I can listen to over and over; like other tracks by this band, it feels truly timeless. I’ve included two videos below: the official version and a 2023 remaster.
