1888 Hong Kong Victoria 10 Cents Silver Coin
I'm no collector, but I do try to buy the year-date 1888 coins when I come across one.
When I first opened an email account a long way back in time, the triple-eights is the number I had attached to my address. And if there is such a thing as a lucky number, I picked 888 as that number.
The only reason I collect 1888 coins is because the number means something to me. It’s not really about rarity, even though a lot of coins from that year are tough to come by.
This one’s for @kerrislravehill. After I showed my first 1888 coin on Hive in 2017, she’s the one who pushed me to keep going by sending me on different occasions:
- 1888 France 1 Franc, .835 silver,
- 1888 Newfoundland 20 Cents Victoria, .925 silver, and
- 1888 Austria 1 Florin - Franz Joseph I, .900 silver.
This 1888 Hong Kong 10‑cent silver coin is an example of historic Asian coinage and a classic piece of British colonial currency.
The 138-year-old coin was struck in silver during the reign of Queen Victoria. It represents a fascinating period in the history of Hong Kong as a major global trade hub under British colonial rule.
The obverse features a portrait of Queen Victoria, while the reverse displays the denomination within an ornate design reflective of late 19th-century British coinage.

What a beautiful coin @silversaver888 ! Best of all it has your very favorite year of 1888! The British Empire was still vast back in those days and Victoria was a busy woman. That has such great history, I don't have one from Hong Kong although it would be a wonderful addition to my stack!

1888 was right in the middle of the western frontier expansion of the United States, so I guess it was lucky for our country and also lucky for you @silversaver888!!👍😀

This is one of many endearing ways to build deeper friendships, community bonds and make stacking FUN!. The number 8 has been traditionally chosen as the Chinese lucky number. I could spot those Asian traditionalist drivers in Vancouver traffic driving a red coupe with gold trim and a license plate bearing the digits 888. Asians that are willing to pay $$$ for plates with those numbers.
