My Call Wasn’t Important to Virgin Media… Until Ofcom Got Involved

Ofcom just slapped Virgin Media with a record £28 million fine, basically because they've been making it deliberately difficult for customers to get help when things go wrong.

In addition to the fine Ofcom also found that Virgin Media are a bunch of Wankers.

Turning Customer Service Into an Obstacle Course

If you’ve ever been stuck in the customer service loop being bounced from one overseas agent to another, reciting your details for the fifth time, but never getting anywhere, you know the frustrations we're talking about here...

According to Ofcom’s investigation, these annoyances weren’t just innocent slip-ups. Virgin Media actually bungled millions of customer interactions over several years. What’s worse, parts of their system seemed almost designed to make people wait longer or hit dead ends with their complaints.

This is why the fine was so high. It wasn’t a one-off mistake—it was a strategy.

When Cutting Costs Hurts Customers

This story just highlights a simple truth: big companies love cutting costs, and customer service is right in their wanker crosshairs. After all, call centers and support teams don’t bring in money, so there’s always a push to automate, trim staff, and steer people away from a real person.

We’ve all been there—stuck in endless menus, arguing with chatbots, shuffled from department to department, repeating the same info again and again. Each of these steps shaves a bit off the company’s costs. Together, though, they add up to a massive headache for customers.

And if switching providers is a hassle or there aren’t many alternatives, what incentive do these companies really have to treat their customers well?

Why We Still Need Regulators

This is where regulators like Ofcom step in. Markets don’t always fix bad behaviour right away—especially when you’re locked into contracts or your choices are limited. This fine is a sign: treating your customers well isn’t optional. If you mess up on a large scale, there are consequences.

Final Thoughts....

Nobody expects customer service to be flawless. Things go wrong and companies make mistakes. The real irritation comes when it feels like the system is rigged to wear you out.

But is this fine large enough, or will Virgin Media just suck it right up and carry on providing shitty customer service....?

Probably!
