무엇보다 이렇게 엄마 개인에게 책임을 떠넘기는 것은 아토피 질환을 유발하는 환경을 만든 다양한 사회적 환경에 대해 책임을 묻지 않는 효과를 낳습니다. 질병의 사회적 원인이 은폐되고 그 비용을 가장 많은 짐을 감당하고 있는 엄마에게 넘기고 있는 것입니다. 이런 현상은 세계적으로 다양한 형태로 반복되고 있습니다. 아이가 아플 때 위생적인 모유 수유를 하지 못했던 엄마를 비난하는 현상을 기록한 볼리비아 지역의 연구나, 지적 장애를 가진 아이를 키우는 엄마에게 전사가 되라고 강요하는 미국사회에 관한 연구에서도요.
