“Vivaldi’s Beloved Disciple” — music that inspires freedom

Italy, 2025, drama, director: Damiano Micheletto, starring: Michele Riondino, Thecla Inzolia, Fabrizia Sacchi.
These young girls are like unseen angels, captivating the churchgoers with their heavenly voices. Hidden from view, behind the choir's barriers, their voices still ring out crystal clear. It's as if even a higher power can't help but be moved by the enchanting sounds of these orphaned girls, who have been taken in by the church and are now being used to turn a profit. But how does this happen? It's quite straightforward, really. The girls are made to sing for royalty and other high-ranking officials, their faces concealed behind masks that resemble bird beaks.
In some cases, women are forced into marriage and then barred from pursuing their passion for music. This is exactly what happens to Cecilia, a gifted violinist who catches the eye of the renowned Antonio Vivaldi, the leader of the church orchestra. However, the story doesn't revolve around Vivaldi's brilliance, as one might expect. Instead, it explores how music can stir up a deep longing for freedom. The question remains, will a talented young woman like Cecilia be able to break free from the shackles of a patriarchal society, where she's expected to either fade into the background doing what she loves, or become a wealthy man's wife, bound to cater to his every whim?
