Plot

The film begins with our protagonist, Harry Potter, practicing magic spells like Lumos Maximus at night while his Uncle Vernon walks into his room to see what he’s doing. The next day, Harry asks his uncle to sign a form, but his uncle replies that he’ll do it only if Harry behaves himself that day—which, coincidentally, is when his Aunt Marge is coming to visit. That same afternoon, while they’re talking after lunch, Aunt Marge starts talking about Harry’s parents, calling them poor and worthless. Our protagonist gets upset and, without meaning to, casts a spell on Marge, who inflates completely like a balloon and flies away.

Without a doubt, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite movie in the entire film series. And I don’t just say that because I’ve been fascinated by it since I was a child, but because of everything it represents for the franchise as a whole. The impact this third installment had on the industry was so significant that it even influenced how subsequent Harry Potter films were produced. But let’s not just talk about that—let’s also discuss its story, which is the most special of all because it features a character who has gone down in history, and I’m not talking about Voldemort.

But before I tell you about him, I want to mention first just how much I loved this Harry Potter movie back then. Even now, I consider it the best this franchise has produced, as it has a darker tone and is somewhat more mature and profound than the previous two films. Imagine watching this movie as a child or a pre-teen and enjoying a story so perfectly crafted that it became completely ingrained in your memory for the rest of your life. Very few movies have achieved this in my life, and in the case of the Harry Potter movies, only this one has managed it.

Definitivamente, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban es mi película favorita de toda la saga cinematográfica que existe actualmente. Y no solo lo digo por lo mucho que me fascinó verla desde que era niño, sino por todo lo que representa para la franquicia como tal. La forma en la que esta tercera entrega impactó en la industria fue tan grande que hasta influyó en la manera de producir las posteriores películas de Harry Potter. Pero no solo hablemos de eso, sino también de su historia, siendo la más especial de todas al tratarse de un personaje que pasó a la posteridad, y no hablo de Voldemort.

Pero antes de hablarles de él, quiero mencionarles primero lo mucho que me encantó esta película de Harry Potter en su momento. Incluso ahora considero que es lo mejor que está franquicia ha sacado ya que posee un tono oscuro y un tanto más maduro y profundo que sus anteriores dos películas. Imagínate ver esta película siendo un niño, un pre-adolescente y disfrutar de una historia tan perfectamente hecha que se quedó impregnada por completo en tu memoria por el resto de tu vida. Muy pocas películas han logrado esto en mi vida y en el caso de las películas de Harry Potter solo ésta lo ha conseguido.

Of course, how could this movie not surprise you when it hits the ground running from the very first seconds? Aside from its impressive audiovisual and production quality, the story also jumps right in with all the essential elements that remind us of our protagonist’s tragic life. As he spends another summer with each of his relatives, Harry Potter has to put up with his Uncle Vernon’s sister, Aunt Marge, who wastes no time insulting Harry’s parents. Harry accidentally casts a spell on her, turning her into a giant human balloon. Our protagonist leaves the house and heads to catch a bus.

This bus is called the “Night Bus” and picks up Harry, who asks them to take him to the Leaky Cauldron in London. There, he is greeted by the Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, who tells Harry he has nothing to worry about regarding what he did to his aunt. However, he reminds him how dangerous it is to be out alone at night because a dangerous criminal is on the loose: Sirius Black. I don’t think there’s a more fascinating and entertaining opening to a movie than the one in this third installment. I love how the film introduces new characters who need no more than a couple of minutes to earn the world’s hatred, such as Aunt Marge.

Aparte de la gran diferencia audiovisual y de producción que posee, la historia también inicia de una vez con todos los elementos esenciales que nos recuerdan la trágica vida que tiene nuestro protagonista. Mientras pasa otro verano en cada de sus tíos, Harry Potter tendrá que aguantarse a la hermana de su tío Vernon, la tía Marge quien no pierde el tiempo e insulta a los padres de Harry, quien de una vez la hechiza por error y se convierte en un globo humano gigante. Nuestro protagonista se va de la casa y procede a tomar un bus.

Dicho bus es llamado el “Autobús Noctámbulo” y recibe a Harry quien les pide que los lleve al Caldero Chorreante de Londres. Allí es recibido por el Ministro de Magia, Cornelius Fudge, quien le dice a Harry que no tiene de qué preocuparse por lo que le hizo a su tía. Another thing I really loved about this movie is the way it shows us a more emotionally unstable, rebellious, and defiant Harry Potter. We’ve already seen glimpses of this in the two previous films, but here we can see how these traits have intensified throughout the movie. But we’ll talk more about that later, since there’s something else in this film’s plot that really caught my attention from the start: the way it introduces the main antagonist. Sirius Black is presented as a criminal, a murderer who has escaped from Azkaban Prison—a place from which no one has ever escaped alive.

From the first half-hour of the film, we see the reputation Sirius Black has in the wizarding world, being branded both a murderer and a traitor, as well as a former follower of “You-Know-Who” (Lord Voldemort). This is the only time Voldemort’s name is mentioned throughout the film, thus directing almost all the antagonistic focus toward Sirius Black. This in itself is quite striking because it is the first and only film in the entire Harry Potter saga to feature an antagonist who is not Voldemort. I, for one, really love this because it allows us to see a very different villain and story.

Otra cosa que me gustó muchísimo de esta película es la manera en la que nos demuestra a un Harry Potter más emocionalmente inestable, rebelde y desafiante. Cosa que ya hemos visto a grandes rasgos en las dos películas anteriores, pero aquí podemos ver cómo estas cualidades se han ido intensificando a lo largo de esta película. Pero luego hablaremos más al respecto ya que hay algo más en la trama de esta película que me llamó mucho la atención desde un principio y es la forma en la que nos introduce al antagonista principal. Sirius Black es presentado como un criminal, un asesino que ha escapado de la Prisión de Azkaban, un lugar donde nunca antes ha escapado nadie con vida.

Podemos ver desde la primera media hora de película la reputación que tiene Sirius Black en el mundo mágico, siendo tachado tanto de asesino como también de traidor y un ex-seguidor de “Tú Sabes Quién” (Lord Voldemort). Esta es la única vez en la que se menciona el nombre de Voldemort a lo largo de la película, dándole así casi toda la atención antagónica a Sirius Black. Esto ya de por sí llama la atención de gran manera debido a que es la primera y única película de toda la saga de Harry Potter que tiene a un antagonista que no es Voldemort. Unfortunately, this story does not have a happy ending, and that is all I can say to the one person who hasn’t seen this movie yet.

But what I definitely liked most about this movie above all else is the introduction of the Dementors and Harry Potter’s battle with them. While these sinister creatures are ultimately a very well-executed narrative device to deepen our protagonist’s journey through his past—his sad moments and his happy ones—this eventually becomes a full-fledged subplot that overshadows the film’s main plot due to everything it represents. To explain this a bit, I’ll just say that Dementors are terrible monsters that feed on people’s happy memories.

That lesson is about being happy and how to overcome bad memories with happy, intense moments. We all have both kinds of memories, but only we decide which ones to hold onto.

As I mentioned above, we see at the beginning of the film that Harry is easily swept up by negative emotions—something anyone would normally do. All the mystery surrounding the traitor and the death of his parents affects him deeply, which is why we see him act this way.

Harry Potter sirve de ejemplo perfecto para esto ya que, como todos sabemos ya, su pasado no ha sido el mejor que digamos. Aparte de la muerte de sus padres, también vivió toda su infancia y parte de su preadolescencia con sus tíos quienes lo trataban de lo peor. Si es de tener algún buen recuerdo, sería estando en Hogwarts. Pero cuando hablamos de recuerdos “felices e intensos” él mismo nos cuenta que solo uno le sirvió para lograrlo y fue un recuerdo inventado. Esto nos deja claro que no necesitamos de muchas cosas en la vida para ser felices, solo tenemos que atesorar los buenos recuerdos que tengamos para seguir adelante y no dejarnos vencer.

Continuando con Harry Potter, vemos que tuvo un cierto desarrollo a lo largo de esta película. When that map appears in the movie, it creates the impression that it has a much more fascinating origin story than what we actually see in the end. Still, both this element and many others we see throughout the film serve perfectly to reveal what happens in the end.

Por otro lado, vemos también que otros personajes como Hermione Granger tienen una participación y desarrollo más notable a lo largo de esta película. Todo esto y más nos demuestra el grandioso ingenio que posee este director para transmitir lo fantástico que es este mundo de Harry Potter. Alfonso Curarón también nos demuestra su talento para crear criaturas fantásticas inolvidables como lo es el diseño de los Dementores, el rediseño del Sauce Boxeador y Buckbeak el Hipogrifo; todos estos hechos tanto por CGI como por efectos visuales prácticos. Para la época en la que fue estrenada en cines, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban envejeció bastante bien ya que mantiene un nivel de calidad visual bastante excelente. Los detalles que tiene la película en cuanto a elementos, lugares y personajes es fascinante ya que se entremezclan bastante bien. Los efectos de sonido también destacan bastante, sobre todo al momento de realizar hechizos ya que el director ideó una forma única de sonido que pasó a la posteridad. La banda sonora también es otra cosa fascinante de esta película, incluso mejor que las anteriores gracias a John Williams.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía.
