The way others see us

Yesterday afternoon, our son started browsing among old photos. That is a hooking activity because once you start looking at all those pictures, it is simply impossible to stop. Then I opened my old photo albums too and that is how I found the following photo:

20260730_182245.jpg

Here, the forty-something-year-old mipiano is holding a photo of the seventeen or eighteen-year-old mipiano holding the portrait painting of the toddler mipiano. 😂 The portrait was painted from a photo I do have, but it would be a real mess if I added that photo of me to this post too. Btw, it is the first photo in one of my albums. The framed painting is in my parents' home, hanging on the wall together with my sister's portrait. They (my family) commissioned an artist to paint us, based on the two photographs of us they had given to that person. That was many, many years ago.

Sorry that I hid the face of the teenage version of myself. I see myself a bit weird, with so thick and dark eyebrows! But that is me; you can trust my word.

It is interesting to notice our feelings when we see the younger versions of ourselves. Someone was much thinner in her thirties... sigh. And someone had more hair. Our son was such a cute little boy... We become a bit nostalgic; that is true. But seeing my photos as a teenager - that is a kind of disaster. 😂 As if I am seeing another person and not myself. Like weird. That is how I see myself, even though I shouldn't.

How others see us is also curious. For example, this is how one of my students sees me. She brought me this as a gift as we had our last lesson the other day... she saw my profile picture on the app I use to communicate with her mom:

! [the real mipiano]IMG-20260508.jpg

...and then she made some effort to create this drawing:

20260729_141155.jpg

No, it is not exactly the same (I like her drawing more than the real me 😂). In the drawing, I smile more than in the original photo, where I was focused and serious, but that is how she sees me, and what she thinks of me:

I was touched by her message. It also reminded me of all the love letters my little students have written me and of the drawings they have made of me in the past. I have a folder keeping these papers; I have no intention of ever throwing away this treasure, although these children have grown since then and maybe they draw differently now.

It wasn't until I saw all these "artworks" at once that I noticed a common pattern in most of the drawings. How do the young ones see me? Can you also notice it?

That strange object that appears so many times by my (our) side is a...

... piano.

Oh well, past or present, the piano is indeed always somehow connected to me, regardless of how old I am or how I see myself. 😋

How do you see your younger versions of you? How do others see you and do you have drawings of you that others made?

Good evening @mipiano, this time I don't know where to begin, whether with that lovely letter, or with the drawings your students made of you with them and with an object. I see a pattern in the drawings; they love you...

I can't tell you much about myself... I don't have any photos of myself... although in my memories of my youth I look strange... more so than now.

I hope you have a good weekend. A big hug.

Good evening @enraizar, here as well 😁

Strange, if different from the rest of the people, is actually great, so I am sure your photos would be cool. Ph also found some photos of himself when he was in elementary school 😆

A good weekend to you too and in case you go to sleep soon, then good night 😇💤

I think your pupils can see the love you have for playing the piano, and that’s reflected in their smiles – which don’t necessarily have to be on their faces, but rather come from the soul.

Back home, far away, there were huge photographs of me decorating the living room; I must have been about five years old, sitting there in a white dress with gladioli in my arms. But I remember myself at 15, with hair so curly it fell past my waist. My face looks almost the same as it did in my teens, but very different from when I was a little girl. No one ever drew a picture of me. But they saw me as sad, serious and shy. They thought I was a ballet dancer because I was so slim. I like the way I look today better; my hair isn’t quite so curly any more, and instead of reddish brown, it’s brown and silver!😆

but rather come from the soul.

How they see the world and people around them indeed comes from there, from the soul 😇

Wow, curly long hair, I wish I had such hair!! I heard from some girls who have long curly hair that it is not easy to comb and that they also prefer to go to the hairdresser and straighten their hair... But I find curly hair very pretty!

Mix of brown and silver - mine as well 😂

I’ve got a photo on my phone of me in the white dress I wore for my 15th birthday party, with my hair like that – I can’t believe how long it was… in the sun, I looked like a redhead!😆

🥰 I am glad you have such a photo and memory. (In my country we didn't have that habit of celebrating the 15th birthday in a special way.)

In my country, they hold huge parties – really big ones. In my case, that wasn’t possible, so I just had a get-together at my house, but there was a dress and a cake.🤗

I actually noticed the long hair first and then overlooked everything else. But now you mention it, yes , the thing that connect you and your students is always there.

Your students are so sweet

True, apart from the 🎹, the long hair is a pattern as well :)) Although it was represented as quite dark hair, nowadays they would need more silver colour 😆

You big softie keeping all those student drawings, the emotional connection must be strong to the little ones you instruct, bless.

Yeah, they say I was chubby cheeked as a baby. You know, I try not to believe them... but the portrait definitely confirms they are right 🤪

Looking at old photos of myself makes me feel so nostalgic, thank goodness there aren’t many… and I suppose we all look a bit strange in them, as we’re actually looking at someone different from ourselves.
I love your pupils’ drawings. They all draw you with that long hair and a smile. They really convey so much love. 😍

Exactly, like looking at a different version of ourselves. I guess it is weird because now the mirror shows our current version, even if it means with more wrinkles. 😅

Long hair, a smile and a piano always - they know how to see the important things 😁

What a great topic! I think not all of us realize how others see us. It's a privilege to have those portraits (with your hands raised in several, haha) and the words of your students.

Haha, yes, with hands raised 😆 now I also notice. I hope I was not scolding them with hands raised but had the arms ready for hugs 😋
