Memorial Day flowers

We are in the middle of a lovely 3 day holiday weekend that is marking the unofficial start of summer.

On Memorial day American flags are flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day to honor the living who continue to serve.

Graves are decorated by volunteers, who visit cemeteries to place small American flags at headstones. It is touching to see graves from 250 years ago with flags flying on them, even though I wish governments didn't cause so much death.

But for me this weekend means a cookout, enjoying the sporting events on TV and taking time to appreciate the flowers!

Peonies and Iris are blooming all around the neighborhood and providing fantastic photo opportunities. After a long winter they bring me so much joy!

Let the summer begin!

I forget how much behind us in plant time you are, our peonies and Easter lilies(daffodils) have already faded by a few weeks at least.

Winter leaves more slowly here. When escaping Wisconsin in search of the color green during the late winter months, it is always such a good feeling to cross the Ohio River.

Yes! Spring has finally settled in here and we are about to get some summery temperatures.

My peonies are a couple weeks away but this one is showing off a little. Not sure if it is a gladiolus or a tulip but summer is on the way!

How beautiful. I would guess these are Angelique tulips. They bloom late in the season. Summer temps are appreciated here!

I had the heat on 2 days ago and today is almost hot enough to want the air conditioning on!

That's quite a change, and that it happens in just about 48 hours surprises me a little.

It reminds me of a relative who is in Toronto and complained a while ago about how quickly the weather changed when compared to other places in the world. Well, it could happen that in one week it would start with freezing temperatures, and the next day would have so much sun and heat that you wouldn't believe there was even snow a few days ago.

Although that seems to happen with seasonal changes, because otherwise the climate where she is is usually well below zero for more than half the year.

Our climate in Wisconsin is quite similar to Toronto. A friend in Canada near the city says she can check my weather to see what hers will be the next day!

Beautiful flowers! my irises are just getting ready to open. I had some sad peonies that finally gave up and didn't come back up this year. We have been going to a neighbors for Memorial Day cookout the last several years and always enjoy it.

Happy Memorial Day! I do love the smell of peonies. A cookout with the neighbors sounds like the perfect way to celebrate the day.
