A Chicago garden stroll

This beautiful structure is the brick pavilion (or summerhouse) located within the Helen and Richard Thomas English Walled Garden at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
Conceived by legendary British landscape designer John Brooke's, the English walled garden showcases a variety of classic English gardening styles.
The circular windows (oculi) on the side walls are designed to act as architectural "frames," capturing and highlighting specific vistas of the surroundings as you look through them.

Another of the highlights in the English walled garden are the classic balustrades and dry-stone retaining walls that John Brookes used to divide the garden into distinct levels and intimate "rooms."
In the above photo along the stone steps, you see a collection of container plants—including potted Allium and neatly trimmed topiaries that add vertical interest to the path. Vines and climbing roses enhance the stonework and demonstrate the classic English style of blending rigid architectural with lush flora.

Beautiful pictures and flowers, I love it. How I wish that my surroundings will be filled with such beauty.
A wonderful story about a beautiful old garden. Thank you. 👍
Beautiful gardens. My Dahlias have a long way to go before they will be blooming. I love the thought and planning that goes into these type gardens. I am usually just happy to have something healthy and blooming 😊
If I had a full gardening crew like they do my garden could be this beautiful, too!
What a beautiful escape from the city! So many gorgeous flowers and beautiful scenery! Thanks for sharing a nice reason to visit Chicago, I haven't been there for many years now, but used to go every few years for conventions!

Love all the flowers, but that Zinnia! beautiful.
I always wished I had some sort of fancy pavilion in my own back yard or a gazebo or something, but alas, I've never had one.
Love those colorful little vases too. :)
