I've spent hours and hours on Spotify listening to everything I could find by great Cuban master drummers who are no longer with us, musicians whose work I have always appreciated and understood as part of the sanctum sanctorum of Latin music. I am specifically referring here to the unforgettable **Francisco Aguabella**, ***Patato***, **Julito Collazo**, and **Mongo Santamaría**. Incidentally, I tend to write about Cuban music and musicians with pride and emotion because that is what is closest to me, but never from a chauvinistic position. I respect everything that has seasoned our collective regional heritage, and I have no interest in endless arguments about who came first, the chicken or the egg, whether son or salsa, Afro-Cuban jazz or Latin jazz. Let us celebrate and enjoy all music, and record the facts—or our interpretations of them—without unnecessary noise. What strikes me about this magical quartet is the enormous influence—or, at the very least, participation—they had in so much of what was good in Latin music during the second half of the twentieth century, and even beyond it. I am always fascinated by connections such as Mongo–Chick Corea, Mongo–Herbie Hancock, Aguabella–Kamasi Washington, Aguabella–Tito Puente, and Patato–Roberto Roena. This was in part possible because all built their careers outside the Island. Although that condition physically disconnected them from the original source of all truth, it also allowed our culture to transcend its geographical boundaries and remain part of the avant-garde after the political upheaval of 1959. In other words, in a context even more difficult than Chano Pozo's. In an economically solvent environment, an extraordinary record of our native rhythms, chants, and cal traditions emerged. The sound of the *barracón*, the mountain, the solar —recorded in the prosperous United States.

## Mongomanía Today I want to focus on **Mongo Santamaría**, although the third tune is a masterpiece by Aguabella and Armando Peraza —another remarkable percussionist who worked extensively with Carlos Santana— that I had never heard until today. Of all the musicians mentioned above, Mongo was the one who recorded the most albums; he was practically addicted to the recording studio. He was one of those percussionists for whom the world does not end with the particular instruments they play. He had an extraordinary sensitivity beyond his congas, as demonstrated by his magnificent covers of iconic songs such as *My Cherie Amour*, *Smooth Operator*, *Summertime*, and *Lady Marmalade*. The two Mongo tunes I am sharing below are a rather difficult selection to make among so much great music that this son of Havana, and friend of Chano Pozo, created and recreated. The first, titled *O Mi Shango*, an original composition, appears on his album *Sofrito* and features the vocals of Collazo and the unmistakable **Mario Muñoz Salazar**. What I find particularly fascinating about *O Mi Shango* is this constant concern with merging batá drumming and Afro-Cuban prayers and chants with practically anything —I wrote last week about Miguel “Angá” Díaz's version of *'Round Midnight* with seven congas doing the part of Monk's piano— and somehow making it work.

## The second Mongo offering is an exquisite live version of his **“Afro Blue”**, a standard that he performs here with the legendary **Dizzy Gillespie**. I listen to this and wonder how much Mongo and Dizzy must have talked about Chano Pozo. What I enjoyed most about this performance is Gillespie's reference to *A Night in Tunisia*, another standard from his own remarkable catalogue. These are fourteen unforgettable minutes.

### Francisco Aguabella Aguabella was described as a sort of **“Rosetta Stone” of African culture**. A master drummer in every sense of the word, equally at home with batá and congas. This is an explosion of batá and jazz —music that simply grabs you— and with it I close this new contribution to the **Three Tunes Tuesday** initiative.
