The Last Of Us (Season 1)

This series has been on my bucket list for a long time. I've had the hype to watch it since it is rated alongside one of my favourites, The Walking Dead. I finally gave it a shot last week, just the first season (Season 1), and I can say it is worth the hype it has gotten over the years.

The beginning of this series almost put me off because I wanted a direct storyline, especially with the emergence of chaos in the world caused by the virus that makes the dead come back to life (zombies). It did not happen that way. The first outbreak scene was interesting, Joel, Tommy, and Sarah experienced it firsthand, and shockingly, Sarah, Joel’s only daughter, got killed. That was it. The next scenes were quite dull and difficult to relate to and, honestly, this made me push the show aside, watching it bit by bit just to see if I could connect with it.

But then, I picked up interest when Ellie was introduced and was handed over to Joel and Tess to take her to the Fireflies so they could use her blood to prepare a cure for the disease, since she is immune to it.

Joel and Ellie’s bond was exceptional. Their conversations, especially Ellie’s humour, kept me glued to the screen. I felt really bad when Joel wanted to leave Ellie with his brother, Tommy, to continue the journey, and I was glad it did not happen.

The best part of the show for me was when Joel was stabbed and Ellie started looking for ways to treat him. That was when she met a group that was suffering from hunger and resorted to feeding on human beings, exactly what happened in Terminus in TWD. She was very brave and performed like a full-grown adult.

I would give Season 1 a 10/10 based on what I just watched. Maybe it is because I am really into zombie apocalypse movies, I expected a lot of things to align with what I already know about this genre, and it did in this series.

I hope Season 2, which I am looking forward to watching this new week, lives up to the hype I have seen on social media.
