[ENG-SPN] The German Who Dreamed of Covadonga / El Alemán que Soñó Covadonga

It is, to say the least, anecdotal that it was a foreigner, enamored with Asturias, who, moreover, captivated by this sublime setting where he remained for the rest of his life, designed the original plans for one of the most venerated sanctuaries in the Principality of Asturias and, by extension, in the rest of Spain: the Basilica of Covadonga.

Located at the foot of the mythical Mount Auseba, from whose heights and shadowy hollows the flame of resistance sprang forth when the torch of the Visigoths' wounded pride was taken up by a legendary figure with a Numantian spirit, the nobleman Pelayo, about whom there are several versions of his arrival in Asturias carrying various sacred objects—some would say objects of power—rescued before the fall of Toledo. The main version has him traversing the so-called Route of the Relics, which runs through the mountainous municipalities of Quirós, Teverga, Proaza, and Morcín until reaching the summit of Monsacro. Another, perhaps less well-known but equally interesting, version has him disembarking with his priceless treasure in the beautiful seaside town of Luarca. The basilica designed by Roberto Frassinelli, the figure we mentioned at the beginning, is another of those nods to ancestral architectures, such as Gothic, that are well worth discovering.

Its proximity to the Holy Cave and its privileged location as a gateway to the unsurpassed beauty of the glacial lakes and the enduring mystery surrounding the Picos de Europa—including the singular experience that, according to legend, confirmed Octavian Augustus's future as Caesar of Rome—combined with the mystery of the life and work of this singular figure, Frassinelli, also known as 'the German of Corao,' make the area more than just unspoiled nature: it is a place of memory, legend, art, and unique heritage.

Resulta, cuando menos anecdótico, que fuera un extranjero enamorado de Asturias, quien, además, hechizado por este supremo entorno en el que permaneció el resto de su vida, diseñara los planos originales de uno de los santuarios más venerados del Principado asturiano y por extensión, del resto de España: la basílica de Covadonga.

Situada a la vera del mítico monte Auseba, desde cuyas alturas y tenebrosas oquedades brotó la llama de la resistencia cuando el testigo del orgullo herido de los visigodos fue recogido por un legendario personaje con espíritu numantino, el noble Pelayo, de quien hay diversas versiones sobre su llegada a Asturias portando diversos objetos sacros –algunos dirían ‘de poder’- rescatados antes de la caída de Toledo –la versión principal, le haría atravesar la denominada Ruta de las Reliquias, que se desarrolla por los montañosos concejos de Quirós, Teverga, Proaza y Morcín hasta alcanzar la cima del Monsacro y otra, quizás menos conocida pero igual de interesante, que le hace desembarcar con su inapreciable tesoro en la preciosa villa marinera de Luarca- la basílica proyectada por Roberto Frassinelli, el personaje al que hacíamos referencia al principio, es otro de esos guiños a las arquitecturas ancestrales, como el gótico, que merece la pena conocer.

Su cercanía, además, a la Cueva Santa y su privilegiada situación como puerta de acceso a la insuperable belleza de los lagos glaciares y el perpetuo misterio que envuelve los Picos de Europa -incluida la singular experiencia, que, según se cuenta, le confirmó a Octavio Augusto su futuro como César de Roma- unido al misterio de la vida y obra de este singular personaje, Frassinelli, al que también se conoce como ‘el alemán de Corao’, hacen del entorno algo más que naturaleza en estado puro: memoria, leyenda, arte y patrimonio singular.
