Reality is more terrifying than fiction. ![](https://images.hive.blog/DQmTTDb1SqZoohDU1Hrs8L5rREV4Gg58dSrh68qREvZSuU5/IMG_20261002_002612_511%20-%201.jpg) [_Source](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/84188-compliance/images/backdrops) _{Edited in Photoshop & Canva App} https://images.hive.blog/0x0/https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/jcrodriguez/245cUBXzvWF8QVukk8UvqTFX6FutvCzv1TyGDA8ybnR5QKA1v6nMvGS4j6y81Qg9M2HLn.jpg

I saw this movie several years ago, but—like so many others—I hadn't written about it. I came across it again and relived the emotions I felt when watching it for the first time: truly distressing feelings. It is a film that quickly makes us feel deeply uncomfortable. Personally, I felt rage and a sense of powerlessness. Yes, I know it’s just a movie, but the most disturbing part was knowing that this actually happened in real life. This was Craig Zobel’s second film, made before he achieved widespread popularity thanks to the series and movies he worked on later. Without a doubt, this film helped launch his career. It was an independent production that enjoyed a successful run at various festivals, including Sitges. And it truly deserved all the praise it received, as the filmmaker manages to place us right inside that room, making us experience the protagonist's panic, frustration, and pain. Becky is the protagonist; she is a young woman working at a fast-food joint—a burger place, the kind Americans love so much and that packs on the pounds, hahaha. Everything seems like a normal day until the restaurant receives a call from a police officer; that is when the nightmare begins for this young worker. What strikes me most is that this actually happened, and not just once; it was later discovered to have occurred on multiple occasions. It is terrifying how a simple phone call, made without any verification, could turn a workplace into a torture chamber for one of the employees. It makes me furious to think about the real victims who were subjected to such abuse. It is also impossible not to feel rage toward the manager—the person in charge—and the way she was manipulated into committing such atrocious acts against the girl, as well as toward the others involved. All of this reminded me of the Milgram experiment. After all, we are human, and it is incredible how easily we can be manipulated into committing horrible acts simply because an authority figure orders it—even when we know it is wrong. That is why I do not trust people who consider themselves morally superior; they are often the worst. They are perfectly capable of committing atrocious acts if ordered to do so by a religious leader, a politician, or a superior. There is a reason why totalitarian regimes and dictatorships manage to subjugate entire populations. History has shown us that seemingly decent people can commit acts that violate their own moral principles if a superior orders them to do so. I looked into the actual events from back then; they took place at a McDonald’s somewhere in the American heartland. Damn it, I hope the real victim managed to get compensation from the company and that those responsible for those vile acts—which were nothing short of torture and humiliation—were sentenced to prison and forced to pay financial damages. That is where it hurts the most. Personally, I have always been wary of authority of any kind. Fortunately, I have never found myself in a situation where I had to betray my principles just because some supposed authority figure ordered me to. I never did mandatory military service; I detest the military and police uniforms of my country. I would never fall into the trap that the characters in the movie—and, of course, the real people involved—fell into. It is astonishing how the ignorance of those individuals led them to act like automatons and psychopaths. It is a pretty hard movie to watch. It made me uncomfortable, and I remember it vividly, even though I saw it years ago. I recommend it; I hope you watch it and give me your opinion on the case. Don't forget that it actually happened in real life.
