The ancient language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis #10

avatar
(Edited)

Welcome back to my DTube Hebrew reading & language series.

The full study is now on line covering the Alef-Beyt here in my blog. This is a beginners program to teach letters, vowels, and reading. The vowels are marked in this bible and are designed to help avoid confusion on what a word is and how it is pronounced. The confusion is obvious in the hundreds of interpretations globally. In modern Hebrew, only children need a niqqud or vowel marking for each letter. Old manuscripts also usually have vowels marked.

This week's reading is from Genesis 1:20-22

We are in the fourth day as God causes all sea creatures to "swarm" (school) in the waters, and causes the birds to fly across the expanse. And let them "swarm" according to every kind. Swarm is one English interpretation and it is interesting that the ESV would choose that word (school, pod, or flock come to mind as options).

I hope you are starting to recognize many words that we have already learned, God, earth, great, which/that , et, all/every, marked below with green dots.

textbirdalive.jpg

We are looking at some new vocabulary today. We have "water" or ma-yim which is always in plural, "creature" or nefesh discussed below, "bird" or oaf and a few more interpretations of al, some of them are above, over, across, on, etc., then we have hai-yah or "alive".

When I read nefesh I usually think of "soul", "person" or "being" and here, I see "creature" as the interpretation. I wondered why the word "creature" did not come to mind. It did not seem to fit so I looked up the number of translations there are for nefesh.

any (1), anyone (2), anyone* (1), appetite (7), being (1), beings (3), body (1), breath (1), corpse (2), creature (6), creatures (3), dead (1), dead person (2), deadly (1), death (1), defenseless (1), desire (12), discontented (1), endure* (1), feelings (1), fierce* (2), greedy* (1), heart (5), heart's (2), herself (12), Himself (4), himself (19), human (1), human being (1), hunger (1), life (146), life* (1), lifeblood* (2), lives (34), living creature (1), longing* (1), man (4), man's (1), men* (2), mind (2), Myself (3), myself (2), number (1), ones (1), others (1), ourselves (3), own (1), passion* (1), people (2), people* (1), perfume* (1), person (68), person* (1), persons (19), slave (1), some (1), soul (238), soul's (1), souls (12), strength (1), themselves (6), thirst (1), throat (2), will (1), wish (1), wishes (1), yourself (11), yourselves (13).

  • "living creature" is comes up one time in the Tanakh.
  • "creature" and "creatures" puts the count up to nine.

Life, Person, and Soul (about 500 times)

These seem to be the dominant interpretations, but the word only reads one way in Hebrew. I run across nefesh all the time while reading and the meaning is just nefesh.

It is understandable for what it means in Hebrew. Translation, based on context, needs to find different words to put in place of nefesh in order to fit the English culture.

If you have been with me from the beginning, you should be able to read on your own, maybe with some mistakes. But you can start practicing and building vocabulary. I am reading a little faster and pointing less each week. I hope you are too.

In modern Hebrew, only children need a niqqud or vowel marking for each letter.

That’s very interesting. With recent lessons I can now say to my friend who is an Orthodox Jew few words. I’m sure he will be nicely surprised 😆. Living soul and alive creature me saying in Hebrew will definately surprise him. I just simply say “nefesh” (nephesh) and tell him what it means. I already know few tricks from your past lessons, so I think it will be conversation in progress. I will let you know his reaction.
BTW: my friend’s name is Leo.

Genesis 1:20-22 New King James Version (NKJV)
20 Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” 21 So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”

Here is where God created all the creatures that lives in the water and those that flies on the sky. He equally blessed them to go forth and multiply and at the end, God saw that all he created was good and prefect. God is a prefect being and his ways are past finding out. Thanks @hebrew for another wonderful word of God this lovely weekend, the word of God is life and thanks for bringing forth life to us.

I love these two words “living soul”. Hebrew is still tabu for me. It’s an artistic language especially in writings. Past lessons thought me about Hebrew using fewer words than English. Now it’s: Life, Person, and Soul חיים, אדם ונפש חיים, אדם ונפש (about 500 times). Ok! And also אלוהים God! And also אלוהים God!...500x!

A Hebrew Bible manuscript is a handwritten copy of a portion of the text of the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) made on papyrus, parchment, or paper, and written in the Hebrew language. (Some of the Biblical text and notations may be in Aramaic.) The oldest manuscripts were written in a form of scroll, the medieval manuscripts usually were written in a form of codex. The late manuscripts written after the 9th century use the Masoretic Text.

Hebrew nefesh, usually translated as "soul," refers to the breath, as does the term neshamah (or nishmah ), which became the most common word for the soul in postbiblical Hebrew. Nefesh also may refer to mental states, in particular to strong emotions or physical cravings. At times nefesh refers to human capabilities, such as the capacity for eloquent speech.

Dear @Hebrew, from your previous post about @hebrew language, i learned about letters & vowels & so many words like God, earth, great, which/that , et, all/every. Today i learned few words also like "water" or ma-yim, creature or nefesh, "bird" or oaf & hai-yah or "alive".
And learned about Genesis 1:20-22 & how "God" causes all sea creatures to "swarm" (school) in the waters, and causes the birds to fly across the expanse. And let them "swarm" according to every kind.

That’s a great idea making your lesson on Dtube. I’m very curious!
Seeing all these written Hebrew words, you literally have be an artist to actualy write it correctly. That’s the beauty of Hebrew language, you are all artists. However, while going through these words few more times, it doesn’t seem so difficult. I guess practice is what it takes.

Great lesson!
I do learn every time I see your lesson.
I can clearly see the meaning in the great one and the small one in Hebrew. To write “one” is very easy. I completely understand that you can’t literally translate from English to Hebrew. In my language of origin it’s exactly the same. It would not make much of a sense if I tried to translate It literally word by word. Hebrew is a beautiful language.

Remember Hebrew does not come with vowel points originally so the Bible should only be read in the original without those vowel points as the rabbis have used those vowel points to corrupt God's Word. There has been many falsehoods introduced by these rabbis who deny Yeshua. Having recently translated many scriptures myself I have posted much of these discrepancies in articles! Beware of what you read and do not trust foreign translations as they are mostly inaccurate where it matters most. Scriptures were purposely hidden not only by the enemy but also by God Himself for example in Daniel He told Daniel to seal the words of a prophecy which now He has unsealed by His Holy Spirit so we can know what those things meant that Daniel wrote down, which was for these times, the end times!

Remember Hebrew does not have vowel points originally these were added by the rabbis in order to corrupt God's Word much as the catholic monk who added chapter and verse numbers separated and corrupted many scriptures by dividing them! Many scriptures in God's Word require that we read in the original languages as a result. The so called scholars of the Bible have mostly contributed to the perversions of the translations of the original texts by persisting in them rather than correcting them. You need to read the original texts people as most foreign language translations have been corrupted! True ancient Hebrew is very different than what is shown in the chapter above which has those vowel points.

@hebrew awesome line here i like this.

This is a really good video! watched it even though I can tell it can greatly help people struggling to learn Hebrew (which isn't an easy language to learn) - and it will give you some biblical knowledge too so all the better :)

I really like your accent - it's barely noticeable but kinda nice like I said in a previous post, makes the video really enjoyable :)

תודה רבה - מועיל מאוד, בהצלחה בהמשך סדרת הפרסומים בנושא!
