Its Been Awhile; Hello
When a missile explodes above you, the air pressure changes. My thoughts have been punctuated by explosions for days now. As a privileged gal from the USA, it is hard to avoid stress over what is now normal in Syria. Things are so dire in this land that even fallen rocket bits represent opportunity; locals rush out to scrap them so they may feed their families.
What does this have to do with why I powered down and left Hive for nearly a year?
There is no easy explanation, so stick with me if you find yourself curious.
It seems to consistently surprise folks that as an American I cannot simply bring my spouse to the United States. Been hoping to marry an Eagle so you might sail on smoother seas? Forget about it— unless you're European or have a well-connected and rich catch. Good thing my husband married me for me, because I cannot offer him anything else.
My Syrian husband provides for me, and his home country is the only place we are both welcome. I suppose that breaks a lot of standards that media might present as if they are facts.
If you know @yaziris, then you know he hates scammers. It's understandable how someone might develop this hatred living in the Middle East; it's nearly impossible to make a living without being shady here. To support his family, he taught himself to code and began busting his ass. Yaz doesn't highlight his struggles. Western peeps will complain to him about whatever inconvenience they have on Hive, and while bullets and bombs are crashing around here, he will take the time to help them.
Until about a year ago things were very very very VERY bad here. I no longer have the faith in humanity to think anyone reading this will feel the weight of their own audacity if they fall into that category. I highlight this to continue my story— why did I leave Hive?
My Hubs built a bot called @hivediscomod, which is currently deployed in 88 servers. Since its conception, many features have been added by request. The ability to scan accounts quickly for suspicious behavior, community stats, the entire comment history between two accounts in an instant... You name it. Probably the most popular feature is curation rewards distribution; many notable projects utilize this.
As anyone who has something to offer here knows, there isn't money on Hive for developers who are not also witnesses. The DHF will pay for race cars, it will not pay for tools that can actually fight the issues here. So how does my husband make the money to upkeep the bot and also get paid a bit for his hundreds of hours of coding? He posts reports highlighting posts that have been curated using his bot. Plenty of projects do something similar, but they are whales, free from the critique of value that regular folks face here.
Due to this outlook, the reports began to get downvoted, which took away income that we needed to survive. The funding was cut without an alternative being provided, and so we had no choice but to power down to make ends meet. If you're familiar with me, you know how sad this made me. I never powered down, in fact I actively powered UP almost ALL of the HBD I received from my posts.
In general life has not been easy, and it seems that with large scale war looming on the horizon, things may get even more difficult. Many parts of me have broken over time. I found myself wanting to run from Hive when I was forced to hit the power down button. I found myself wanting to run from humanity. I wiped my account to the extent I could, deleted discord, and hid away for a long while.
Well, I'm here again. I'm ready to share should there be eyes to see it. I'll never feel quite the same about here or anywhere else again, however. I guess life does that to most of us in time. The magic of young adulthood dies violently in the arms of middle age.
I have plenty of reasons to smile still.
Well, if you've read thus far then I suppose I owe you an update...
I'm sitting in the sun drinking coffee with my love as I type. I'm every bit as obsessed with him as I was years ago, probably more to be honest. I look at him, and I know that I'd take every turn of the wild ride we've been on again in a heartbeat if I had to.
My Arabic is... objectively better?
I still create content; I've just stopped sharing it with the world this last year... I guess this is the first step in breaking my silent streak.
Aside from that I can't say many excessively positive things. Maybe that makes me happier. Life is gritty and life is hard; I have the best olive oil in the world in my kitchen though. Just like the glass jugs we fill after buying it by the kilo, it's all in what you do with the weight.

Sheesh, yeah everyone is always surprised when they learn I moved to Syria, but for those of us who have seen the hurdles of coming to the USA, we know it's the only option other than separation from our spouse. I am so very happy to hear that you and Yaz and still kicking, still in love, and hanging in there. I had no clue you were in an area near the missile strikes. The news here leads most of us to believe the strikes were only being conducted near the border where Hezbollah might be concentrated. Of course, maybe you're near the border, or maybe the strikes are spread further through the country than our media is reporting. You and Yaz are our only "eyes and ears on the ground" over there, as far as I know. If there are other Hiveans near you, I don't know about them, and the media certainly doesn't tell the complete story.

PHEW, so true. It's hard to even begin to put words to that, I could probably write an entire article about it... In summary of my understanding/ experience- Syria is not being hit directly because everything valuable has already been decimated. The country is no longer a threat to Israel because they essentially demilitarized the government here last year. Over the course of a few days they bombed every significant military asset here. There are also no US assets here, so Iran has no reason to waste money dropping iron on us directly.
HOWEVER, Israel occupies a lot of southwest Syria these days, and they also have a long-standing partnership with the Druze, whose main concentration is in Suweyda. I live in the capital, which is only a skip and hop from where the new "buffer zone" is. So when Iran is shooting at certain areas in Israel the missiles pass over us, and are shot down before they reach Israeli turf. They have been kind in trying not to shoot them down directly over the city, but some have fallen in the suburbs of Damascus. Even a few miles away they are not fun to hear, you can feel them when they explode above. For most Syrians this is literally nothing at this point, but for me it is scary as all heck.
Theres so many more little details to it all, Syria is nothing if not complicated, but that's the meat of it.

@grindan, I'm so sorry to hear this. I can't say I'm suprised. I've seen some shitty things here, and some shitty things have happened to me here too. The reason I'm here is because I can't find a better alternative, and there is still a lot of cool people here and a perhaps naive hope that things might improve, which is probably daft, as it's a mirror of the 'real' world which isn't doing too well right now is it?
And of course, when there is more to lose, it's all the more awful. I'm sorry some of your youthful enthusiasm and hope has been shattered so.
You two are gorgeous and I honestly feel so happy seeing your picture and reading about how the two of you are obviously madly in love which is carrying you through some really, really hard times. Sending you love from Australia and you are both in my thoughts.

These last few years have been so full; equal parts beauty and eviscerating new awarenesses... Dealing with some stability being swept from under my feet due to weird Hive politics solidified a sort of bitterness in me that had been brewing steadily... Hive always felt like an oasis to me because of the good things you mentioned, it hurt to be disillusioned by life from so many angles all at once. It's sad that BS happens to so many of us here; I'm bummed to hear that Hive's less cool side has affected you as well. Without the friendships formed here I think the whole thing would fall apart.
On a more positive note: LOVE! Bizarre ideologies, living in a country always in the middle of one conflict or another, annoyances over visas and other arbitrary guidelines... It always has been, and always will be worth it to me to follow my heart. Whatever goes on in around us, Yaz is my paradise.

I'm glad you're (relatively) safe, that you're living life to the best of your ability, and most of all that you two have one another. I think it's one of the most amazing love stories of all time, quite honestly. (I really mean that. It should be written up in an article or a TV mini-series or something.) And it's so incredible and inspiring that you are so in love that you'll live in a war-torn and dangerous part of the world to be with the love of your life!

I think when there is too much going on, both of us tend to just get quiet... These last few years have been a wild ride for Yaz and I, but one I know neither of us would change.
There's been a lot of adjustments; scary experiences... But also, a million more wonderful ones- many say that love is insanity, but I feel more sane sitting in Syria with the one I love than back in the states, that's for sure! Yaz is my rock, and whatever may come I'll always stay by his side.
Gosh that's the truth! I'm glad The Ink Well is still going strong though, it was one of the first places I felt I fit in here... And coincidentally the place I got to harass Yaz in and find out how wonderful he is ahahaha!
My discord hiatus will probably endure for some time, but I can reach out to you on Yaz's account... I hope life is being kind to you and that you and the fam are enjoying the beginning of Spring ❤️
