Any colour as long as it's black and white

Over the years I've taken countless photographs and over more than six years have shared some here, usually simply to draw attention, add some visual interest...and rarely to demonstrate any skill in photography. In fact, I've said many times that I have none...I point the camera, press the button and sometimes the memory card saves something reasonable; there's little skill involved.

Today, I was flicking through some folders looking for something in particular and came across one called black and white...I investigated and found an assortment of shots I've taken in black and white and that I'd forgotten I had. There's nothing special in there, the same old average shots I always take, but because I've not really done it before, I thought I'd share some black and white shots in a photography post.

I'm not going to write a lot of words because it's about the photos but I've added some descriptions and locations beneath each photo if you're interested.

Those are quite amazing. There is something about black and white that is really raw and nostalgic for me. When I was growing up my dad had a black and white darkroom because he was color blind and wouldn't have been able to tell if the colors were right. We took a crap ton of photos in black and white growing up so we could develop them ourselves.

Thanks mate, much appreciated.

Black and white shots are great...I grew up when that's the only choice people had I guess,, when I was a little kid, and often like going through the boxes of old black and white photos I have. Funny...my grandfather was a photographer and processes on black and one and colour...black and white primarily though.

That is cool. I remember my dad had a private lab that he used to send his stuff out to when he did color. It was only later that we started getting them processed at the local convivence store.

One of regrets is that I didn't take more interest in my grandfathers two loves: Photography and woodworking/carving. I was a kid though I guess and kids will be kids. I suppose this is why I suggest to people to get involved while they can, parents and grandparents won't be around forever.

Yes, very good point! My dad is still around, but he doesn't have any of his equipment anymore. It was always something he and my sister bonded over. Him and I always had computers as our shared interests.

Thank you, I'm glad you like them, I was a little nervous showing these ones as black and white photos aren't something I do much at all.

You're welcome... even though it's black and white which friends rarely sing. for black and white, the day is really very good... especially in your area, it has excellent natural beauty.

These were work.of professional...there are few above which tells.how much preparation gone behind clicking (like pencil shot) one over the another and the snooker shot...they nicely captured...

point the camera, press the button and sometimes the memory card saves

I think i need something like that magical equipment😉

Thanks man, so cool of you to say this...I'm a professional non-photographer! Lol.

I thank the camera for doing all the work, my hands for holding it and my shutter finger for pressing the button...other than that I can take no credit.

I'm glad you like the shots mate.

I'd rather no one uses my photos in their own posts to be honest, but that's for asking. A few have used them without asking and I'm never kind to those people.

I am happy to provide a specific image if you know what you want and make strong reference to it being my photo, but letting people take random images to use could potentially open the floodgates and I'd prefer not to. I can't stop people just using them though, but when I see that I'll usually downvote that account into oblivion. I don't like plagiarism and bad manners.

Let me know if there's a specific one you would like. We can tee it up on Discord if you use that.

Well its not like I can make any technical comments about these beautiful photos!

all I have is: aim camera, press shutter release and hope.

The is pretty much what I'm doing but way less professional looking 😅
I love the one with the watch 😍

For those who follow the, aim camera, press shutter release and hope, methodology greatness awaits...or at least a great level of averageness!

Thanks for your comment, I appreciate those who consistently show up, it builds better relationships.

at least a great level of averageness!

Yup that would be what I would use to describe my photos 😂

I did get praises for my recent photography skills (supermarkets shots) though, hahaha!

The feeling is mutual, my friend. Building a relationship always requires effort from both sides.
I appreciate your guidance and support throughout this time! 😊

Those pictures are a professional job, mate 😎.
I’m no expert but I liked them all, some more than others (The McLaren P1 my favorite🧡😍). The picture of the cathedral looks beautiful and having done it in B/W I think makes it look even better. The one of Waymouth could perfectly be the illustration of an old story.
Seriously, mate, good job 👏🏻👏🏻(🇪🇸/gran trabajo 😉), what a beautiful treasure you had hidden

Thanks for coming by and having a look, and I'm pleased you like them.

I'm far from a professional but every now and then I get lucky and produce something greatly average, but if people like them, (myself included) then that's mission accomplished right?

Thanks for your comment, you've inspired me to respond in perfectly fluent Spanish...Trust me, I'm very good at it. Ready?

I've hear it's a difficult language to learn...I found it easy though...I mean the two words I know fluently only took me seconds to learn and master. I must have a talent for it.

Thanks mate, I appreciate it.

I used to be afraid of manual mode but these days I use it mostly, aperture, shutter-speed and focus usually, sometimes other features but rarely. This, when I'm doing macro or something I have time to spend...when on holiday or randomly shooting in general situations it's auto...or my smart phone (S22 Ultra.)

I particularly like that snooker table. And I spent many happy summer holidays in Weymouth as a child then last year finally went back for the first time in 45 years. My view of the world has clearly changed - I was amazed how many pubs there are around that harbour that I never noticed before!

Thank you...I wish I'd gotten all of that closed ball in frame...but I'm a nutbag with a camera so it wasn't to be. :)

I really liked Weymouth, was based there and went all over the region, and think I'd like to explore some more as there's a lot close by. That's probably what surprised me the most with England...so bloody small but so many things to see. I overlaid the entire UK over the State of Australia I live in (in scale) and it fits a few times and more...Australia is vast, but the stuff to see in the UK...I have to get back!

I feel you need to express a lot of peace through your photos. At least these you had saved in a folder. You made a selection and what these beautiful images tell me is that you enjoy peace very much.

Oh but how wonderful that you only know how to push the button 🤣

Peace is something that often eludes me but I often seek. I went back over my images above with fresh eyes based on your comment and I agree with you, I seem to have selected images that convey a peaceful, calming vibe...not intentionally selected that way, but clearly subconsciously.

Oh but how wonderful that you only know how to push the button

I've pushed a lot of buttons in my time, not always on cameras either, so I've had some practice. Let's just say I have a PhD in button pushing.

Whenever I look at black and white pictures, I am reminded of the old times and the same thoughts that our forefathers used to have come to my mind.

Black and white photos do that for sure and I think there's a lot of appeal in them. I tend to look deeper into the photograph and see nuances and elements that colour may cause me to overlook.

Thanks for your comment.

Hey mate, I can see you deployed a downvote on the last comment I left on this particular comment of yours. It's all good, I don't mind at all...just that I'm not sure if you realise you've done that. If you did it on purpose then great, well done, if you did t by accident my suggestion is you learn how to do it right lest you downvote someone who takes offence and takes action against you in return.

That Wells Cathedral photo looks wonderful. I guess I am just a sucker for symmetry, but I really appreciate the intricate lines. Even though it is just black and white, the different brightness levels accentuate the shadows.

Wells Cathedral was an amazing place to visit, even though I'm not religious at all...so amazing to see the architecture and considering how old it is (construction started in about 1175) it blows the mind.

Something strange is happening with my laptop. It's not loading any photos right now, so I'll comment on a photo post without seeing the photos... What you wrote above caught my attention:

...and rarely to demonstrate any skill in photography.

I like this modesty and self-evaluation, especially as it is the way I think about myself and my photographs.

However, I have seen many of your photos that are very good. You may say it's a layman's opinion, but I like to think I have an eye formed, not by studying photographic theory and technique but by watching an awful lot of movies where I was more interested in the image than the action...

Probably the laptop malfunction will be fixed (I think it's the memory too full) and I'll be able to see the photos too. I'm looking forward to it, as I'm looking forward to the topic suggestions on Friday. Sounds like it's going to be addictive!

Thanks mate, I really appreciate the words...I think there's a problem with the images across the board with the blockchain as I'm having the same problem...they'll come back, they are not gone completely.

I'm humbled that you think my photos are good, tanks for saying so and please come back and have a look at these ones, you may find something of interest.

I've seen the photos and they are excellent. I'm trying black and white too, actually converting color ones to black and white and I haven't gotten anywhere near photos like yours. I can say that "Wells Cathedral" is classic, the architecture and the repeated lines, the geometric shapes are very sought after and look good in monochrome. Apart from this photo, my favorites are Blonde girl at Durdle Door; Harbour - Port Lincoln; Castle Drogo; Dyrham Park... pretty much in that order.

I could say I'm envious of you, but I'm not, because I try not to be envious when I see quality. It pushes me to try to train more, experiment, and work harder.

Well, Galenkp blessed my feed with a couple of amazing shots. No matter if it is in black and white, still they are extraordinary.

And one thing more is that you are asking not to make technical questions about photography to a person who will be satisfied if you even post a good picture taken through a mobile device 😂(I mean I don't know much about photography, I just aim for and hope for the best shot. Lol)

I aim for the best shot too, but don't always attain that goal...it is what it is I guess, I'll only be able to do so much based on my limited knowledge and skill. I don't have enough interest in photography to learn more than I know at the moment, and no time for it either.

Thanks for your comments.

Devon, sounds like the place I've heard about, something about how the French gained entrance into the UK and conquered them. I hear that's where the border is; a body of water. It's Devon right?

Nice shots BTW, I'm a fan of Black and White pictures. Coffin Bay and the picture of the deer are my favourite.

Devon is a county in England with borders that span east to west and has coastline on both also. East faces France and west faces Ireland. I reckon if you do some googling you'll be able to find out some history about the area, there's a lot of it.

Black and white photos are cool right? I like the deer shot also and Coffin Bay...the best oysters in Australia come from there.

I enjoyed seeing your black an whites.

It's always interesting to me to see which details the black and white photos cause to pop forward. In the past I have turned some of my color photos to black and while for various reasons and have seen others post both as well for comparison and it is a bit fascinating to see how it sometimes totally changes the focus of what your eyes pick out in them.

I think that's one of the amazing aspects to B&W photos...the way different things emerge from within the photograph, or fade away into the background. It's pretty cool right?
