“For days I’ve been seeing, on a gate at the entrance to my house, what looked like butterfly cocoons. I saw caterpillars walking around there, and I had never witnessed this process up close. I refrained from scrubbing the gate — which is rather grimy — so as not to disturb them. At this point I was meandering around the perimetre near the water, not even sure where or when I was going to circle back. Kind of like an explorer in a new land! Hiking a trail for the first time usually is the most exciting thing one can do really, especially when you are on your own and no other hikers are on the trail” the author told us.

The thing is, everything here was booming and growing back then. Lucca built its wealth on trade, banking and diplomacy. There are amazing Renaissance walls here, but Lucca never used them for their intended purpose. It was a message. We are ready for defense, but we prefer diplomacy.
