Slowly Fading

Summer is almost over. I know it's hard to believe, but meteorological autumn starts in less than five days. Calendar autumn starts in less than 30 days on September 22nd. Where did the time go? @mrsbozz and I have been doing our best to squeeze in as much camping as we can before the weather starts to turn and we have to hunker down for the winter. With a camping trip scheduled for this weekend, I thought it only right to look back to another one of the trips we took this summer.

The weekend after we visited the Dublin Irish Festival, we packed up the travel trailer and headed to the northeast corner of Michigan's lower peninsula. We had never camped in Rogers City before, so I thought trying out Hoeft State Park might be a fun trip.

It was actually a pretty laid back weekend for us. We had a nice campsite that had a lot of space and we didn't feel like our neighbors were right on top of us like some state park campgrounds. We did make a few day trips, but for the most part we just hung around our campsite reading and watching nature.

There was this group of black squirrels that were having a good old time running around playing with each other and looking for food. It started off pretty innocent with just one of them running around between the woods and the campsites. Then next thing I know there were like five of them all making a commotion. I took some video of them too, but I will maybe share that some other time. I know it might be hard to see them in the photo above, a few of them just look like blurs, but they are there.

The campground sits right on the shores of Lake Huron and while the southern part of the state has some rather rocky beaches, the northern shoreline is a lot more forgiving with the wonderfully sandy beaches you see in the photos above. If it had been just a little hotter, I might have thrown on my trunks and taken a dip in the waters. It's been a long time since I have swam in any of the great lakes. I really need to fix that.

There is an old stone bathhouse at the top of the shoreline where you can hang out and use the facilities. Many of the old state parks in Michigan have buildings like this. I remember them very well from when I was a kid. Unfortunately, this building was closed off for the weekend. It appears someone had rented it out through the parks service and they were having a wedding there. It's definitely a very scenic place to have a weekend, but it makes it hard for the public to enjoy the beach when amenities like this are off limits.

Of course, a couple trips to the ice cream store were in order as well. This is a photo of @mrsbozz sitting in the truck while I waited in line for them to make my malt. The first day I got a strawberry malt, the second day I got a chocolate one. They were both delicious, but I think the strawberry one was just a little bit better. Just beyond those buildings on the other side of the truck is the harbor and then Lake Huron.

I tried to put a pin in this area for @worldmappin, but their site seems to be down this morning. I threw them a message in Discord, but maybe they will see this tag first and look into it.

Besides a few other side trips I will write about in future posts, we also ate pretty good at our campsite too.

This is a new recipe that my wife and I have been trying for a while now. You can actually fix it a bunch of different ways. This was a Greek style, but we have also done Caesar and Mexican twists on this recipe too.

Basically, you take some ground meat like chicken, turkey, beef, pork, goat, whatever, and you spread it really thin in raw form on a tortilla. Then you place it face down on a really hot griddle so that it cooks all the way through.

Trust me, it freaked me out at first too, but as long as you spread the meat thin enough, you don't have to worry about it not cooking all the way through. We have had this dozens of times and we have never gotten sick from food poisoning (knock on wood). Then we threw together some condiments to put on it including tzatziki sauce, cucumbers, onions, and tomatoes mixed together, and some parm cheese.

This is the end product, you can fold it up and eat it like a taco, or you can leave it as is and eat it like a tostada. The cool thing is, it's really quite healthy for you too. Since the tzatziki is made with yogurt it is a bit more healthy than sour cream, we use low carb tortillas, and then you just have your veggies, and protein. As long as you don't go nuts on the cheese, you can have two or three of these for pretty low calories or whatever it is you count.

If you want, you can drizzle a bit of olive oil or Greek salad dressing on it too. We also used a Greek seasoning blend in the ground meat mixture.
