πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» ASEAN Hive Community Challenge #174 🧏 Sounds Of Home 🏑

Greetings ASEAN Hivers, @justinparke here with a new challenge about sounds, particularly the familiar sounds of your home or where you live.

🧏 Sounds Of Home 🏑

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» Week #174 πŸ‘©β€πŸ’»

September 29th ➑️ October 6th, 2025

Β  Β  Β My Cambodian family and I have been in the USA for around 3 months already, and something I can't get used to is the silence and isolation. I miss roosters crowing, neighbors coughing, dogs barking, knives slamming against cutting boards, kids shouting, motorcycles, karaoke speakers, rain, and I could go on and on, but I think you all understand. Most of all I miss houses with open windows and doors that allow you to hear all these things.

Β  Β  Β Southeast Asian homes have lots of familiar sounds, so for this challenge I would like you to show me all the things activities that create the soundscape of your home or living space. Perhaps it's bullfrogs, crickets, and karaoke, or maybe your soundscape is kids laughing, cows mooing, and a moto repairman at work, whatever it is, document it as best as possible and tell us what sounds you like, don't like, why, etc.

Week #173 ASEAN Hive Challenge Winners
πŸ—£οΈ ASEAN Expressions 🀯

Β  Β  Β This challenge was very fun for me to read the entries. Despite all four winning entries being from Filipina ASEAN Hivers, each post is full of very different insightful wordplay. I particularly like the term "greedy look" when referring to eyeing someone's food, and also how @tegoshei provided some standard sayings and then some more humorous satirical twists on the originals. Please have a look and support anything of interest, and know that all four are worthy of your time and consideration, thanks.

Winners Don't Quit: A Mother's Unwavering Love
by: @diosarich
(EXCERPT) **Just like most proverbs the world over, most of us have probably heard all Philippine proverbs throughout our childhoodβ€”usually in the form of scolding or warnings from our parents. Most have been handed down from generation to generation and contain sayings that prescribe norms, impart a lesson, or simply reflect standard norms, traditions, and beliefs in our community. **

"Takaw Tingin": My Sister's Craving Ended with Me Finishing the Leftovers πŸ€·β€β™€
by: @wanderelle
(EXCERPT) Have you ever filled your plate with delicious-looking food but cannot finish it all? πŸ‘€ β€œTakaw tingin” is a Filipino idiom that exactly describes it. Its literal definition means β€œgreedy look.” But it actually refers to a person who’s tempted by the sight of food, because of its beauty or novelty, but in the end, it turns out that they don’t like it or can’t finish it. It can also be extended to other situations like impulsively buying things because they look appealing, even if you don’t need or use them.

ASEAN Hive Community Challenge #173: ASEAN Expressions
by: @tegoshei
(EXCERPT) It's been ages since I last participated in ASEAN Hive Community Challenge, so I'm excited to do so again. For challenge 173, we are to share "ASEAN Expressions". People in the Philippines love inventing words or phrases. It's like we're creating a new language out of the original one. For instance, we say "LODI" instead of "IDOL. It's just idol but backwards. The same goes for "SAKALAM" instead of "MALAKAS".

Aseanhive Community Weekly Challenge #173 Asean Expression : "Push Mo Yan Te" (Go For It)
by: @krissymayol
(EXCERPT) This is an epic challenge! My entry is a famous tagline in my country whenever you are going to start, in the middle of it or you failed or it's a success. We Filipinos encouraged ourselves and others to go through things that hinders our goals by lively saying "Push mo yan te! " or in English it says "Go for it" I am going to elaborate how this expression is being used in my experiences.

Last week we enjoyed some great ideas about the memories of all. Of course, respect for all the person present was loved.

At the same time, our desired message about walking with animals and their sound will certainly inspire you.
@asean.hive sir and @justinparke
Thanks for bringing us to us this extraordinary event through your hard work and great skills.

This is brilliantΒ β€” taking things you miss and turning a disappointing situation into a positive challenge for the ASEAN Hive community! Kudos! ❀️

This is such a nice theme! Sounds really do remind us of home and daily life. I like how you shared the difference between Cambodia and the USA β€” it shows how important small sounds are. Excited to see what everyone will share for this challenge!”
