Today is Thursday and, as they say, your body just knows it. It’s that day of the week when nostalgia finds a place in our routine, allowing us to travel through pixels. I’m delighted to accept the invitation from my friend @lanzjoseg to take part in his brilliant initiative [“TBT: A photo, a story”](https://peakd.com/hive -192096/@lanzjoseg/concurso-tbt-una-foto-una-historia-un-dia-de-esos-jueves-9-de-julio), because remembering isn’t just about reliving the past, but also about honouring the roots that keep us grounded, no matter how far we’ve flown.
It’s not every day you turn ten
When happiness fit in a refrigerator.
Sometimes, peace has a very distinct face and is bathed in perfect light. In this photograph, time seems to have stood still in the back seat of a car, where the sunlight streams in with an almost reverential gentleness to caress Sofía. She is not just a sleeping child; she is the portrait of a much-needed respite, of a small body yet immense in strength that has decided to claim a moment of absolute calm.
Sofía rests on a lilac pillow, wrapped in the familiar texture of her blankets. She is wearing her favourite grey T-shirt and those pink shorts that highlight her vitality, even whilst she rests. If you look closely, her face does not reflect the battle, but rather a sweet surrender to restful sleep. We were on our way back, leaving behind the white walls, the smell of the hospital and that ‘scare’ which made our hearts skip a beat, but which, in the end, couldn’t get the better of us. Chemotherapy is often an overwhelming giant, draining one’s energy and dulling the colours, but that day was different; there was a promise in the air that fatigue couldn’t erase.

That little girl you see there, immersed in a deep sleep whilst her seatbelt keeps her safe, was just a few hours away from crossing the magical threshold of ten years old. That rest was more than a defeat in the face of treatment; it was a strategic recharging of energy. Sofía knew—perhaps in her subconscious—that her midday slumber was the necessary prelude to the magic that awaited her as the sun went down.
Because that’s how it was. When she woke up at home, her anxiety turned to excitement. Her tenth birthday arrived surrounded by laughter, secrets whispered in hushed tones, and the blissful hubbub of a pyjama party with her little friends. There was no trace of the clinic, nor of fear, nor of unease. That night, the room was filled with balloons, stories and that tangible happiness that only children know how to create out of thin air.
Today, when I look at this photo, I don’t feel nostalgia, but rather a deep sense of gratitude. It reminds me that, after every storm and every weary afternoon, there’s always a ‘happy night’ waiting. I’ll cherish the peace on her face, because it was the moment of relief before the best of celebrations. What matters isn’t the weariness of the journey, but the joy of having come home to celebrate life.
If you want to take part, I think you’re still in time – you’ve got until 11.59 pm TODAY, THURSDAY, so hurry up and remember to follow the rules.
