True friendship is more than just blood ties
Today is Wednesday, and the phrase hanging in the air carries a hint of distance: “not my brother”. Technically, if we were to check the civil registers or the family tree, the conclusion would be cold and definitive: we do not share the same surname, nor the same blood, nor the same origins. But the heart, which knows nothing of notarial records, rebels and turns the verdict on its head: “He’s not my brother, but he’s just like one”.
Without even realising it, my morning has been filled with a soundtrack that seems to bridge two eras and two languages.

First, the velvety voice of Roberto Carlos emerges. I start humming that line, “you are my soul brother, truly my friend”… it’s a declaration of principles! In that song, friendship isn’t an afterthought; it’s a chosen kinship. It’s that man or woman who, in difficult times, doesn’t ask why, but is simply there. By saying they’re “like a brother”, we’re elevating friendship to the highest degree of human loyalty. It’s acknowledging that there’s a brotherhood that isn’t inherited, but built with the cement of shared days.
But then, the humming changes in rhythm and tone. I hear the echo of 1969 (my youth), the melancholic harmonica and the voice of The Hollies: “He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother”.
As I write, I recall the image that inspired that hymn: Father Flanagan at Boys Town, watching a boy climbing a hill whilst carrying a younger one, whose legs were weakened by polio. The logic of the world would suggest that this is an unbearable burden, a dead weight that slows one’s progress. But when asked if he was tired, the boy offered the most luminous reply of the 20th century: “He’s not heavy, he’s my brother”.

That’s the ultimate twist, I told myself. When we say that someone “isn’t my brother, but it’s as if they were”, we’re agreeing to carry their burdens without them feeling heavy to us. The “non-brotherhood” of blood dissolves in the face of the “brotherhood of the shoulder”, isn’t that right, my friend @issymarie2?
Sometimes, life puts us in that situation. We look at that friend who is grieving, facing failure or battling an illness, and we take their pain upon our own shoulders. The world looks at us and says: “Why are you trying so hard? He’s not part of your family, he is not your brother.” And we, with a smile that comes from a place genetics can’t quite explain, reply that the burden is non-existent because the bond is absolute. What do you think, my friend @sacra97?
So today I celebrate that lineage without surnames. I celebrate the brothers and sisters we choose along the way, those who restore our faith when we lose it and who make us sing – whether in Spanish or English – that our true family is not the one we’re born into, but the one we sustain – and which sustains us – as we climb the hill. I miss my friend @charjaim, @fibra69...

Tomorrow will be another day, but today I’m left with this certainty: we don’t share DNA, but we share the burden. And because of that, nothing feels heavy.

No es de tu familia, he is not your brother".
Extraño a mi amiga @chironga67, a @josegilberto...
